[HOT] : Pokemon GO Fest 2021: Report
The Pokemon GO phenomenon is already celebrating its fifth anniversary. It does not make us any younger… To say that I still see myself hunting Salamèches in the Parc de Bruxelles in a group of 100 people as if it was yesterday when the game was released… Although the madness of the game’s launch has subsided quite a bit today. h * i, the game still has a large number of active, even very active players.
To celebrate the fifth anniversary, our friends at Niantic hosted a special event taking place on July 17 and 18, 2021, in the sweet name of Pokémon GO Fest 2021. Papayou and Monsieur Scintillant each had the chance to be offered a precious sesame for this event and decided to give you an account of this rather special experience.
Reminder for those in the background
Pokémon GO is a mobile game that is played primarily outdoors. The game asks you to leave your home, cell phone in hand, to explore the real world and catch the Pokemon appearing in augmented reality on your screen. In addition to the fun aspect of collecting all the Pokémon such as Sacha du Bourg-Palette, this game has the merit of making us exercise, wear out our sneakers and discover points of interest in our neighborhoods represented by pokestops on the game map to collect Pokeballs and other useful items.
Pokemon GO Fest 2021
All Pokémon GO players could participate in the activities organized during this weekend for free, but only those who decided to purchase the precious sesame on sale at 5 euros instead of 15 could on the occasion of this fifth anniversary benefit from the maximum rewards. Here is what we were able to achieve with this famous pass that was offered to us.
Day 1: capture event
A lot of activities that could be easily done alone were offered on this first day. The concept was that the habitat changed every hour, causing different pokemons to appear in the wild. There were 4 different habitats and 4 associated collection quests. Each quest required you to capture a certain number of Pokemon species. When completed, the main reward was incense.
This reward was not trivial because using an incense during this first day gave you a good chance of meeting rare Pokémons such as Pijako, Judokrak or Zarbis but also chromatic Pokémons. I’m pretty happy that I was able to catch the above rare Pokemon and still got to meet a little Chromatic Maril. I thought that the encounter rate of Chromatic Pokémon was going to be much higher, but hey 1 it’s still better than nothing …
Besides that, a special quest in 11 relatively simple steps was available for pass holders. These quests made you meet your choice of a rocker or “idol” Pikachu and 2 Pokémon adorned with strange hats in order to prepare a concert and meet the legendary Pokémon Meloetta.
Day 2: Raids at (smo) gogo
The second day was mostly centered around Legendary Pokemon raids. Until 6 p.m., all of the Legendary Pokémon released in Pokémon GO took turns appearing in arenas around the world.
I had a lot of hope that I would be able to capture the few Legendary Pokémon that I missed out on during the various lockdowns, but unfortunately I couldn’t find any raiding parties at the right times. Pokémon GO is a social game that sometimes requires teams of 5 or more players to defeat Legendary Pokémon raids. In fact, if you can’t synchronize with friends, it is almost impossible to capture these fabulous animals.
A remote raiding and invitation pass system was put in place during the pandemic to make life easier for players during raids. It is unfortunate, however, that a matchmaking system does not exist for players struggling to form a party, especially at events like Pokémon GO Fest. Finally, in the end we still had a lot of fun and hope to be able to participate in the next GO Fest again.
