Among Us or Werewolf Among Us? The clone tops the Chinese App Store ranking
Among Us is one of the hottest titles of the moment, on PC and mobile devices, but in China there is someone else who has taken his place … in every sense. It is about Werewolf Among Us and it is nothing more than a clear rip-off of the aforementioned indie phenomenon.
The clone in question is so popular in China that, according to a report by SCMP, it has been dominating the download charts of the local App Store for several days already, managing to surpass even the giants signed by Tencent, such as Peacekeeper Elite (the Chinese version of PUBG) is Honor of Kings, which daily grind millions of money.
To date, Werewolf Among Us, developed by Shenzhen Youliang Technology, boasts over 478,000 downloads, an impressive result if we consider that it was launched, without any form of marketing, only on October 28th.
How did it quickly become so popular, despite the fact that real Among Us is actually available in local stores? The answer is simple: Werewolf Among Us is REALLY very inspired by Among Us, from which they copied the map and game mechanics. The only difference is in the setting, set in a medieval castle and, more importantly, in the presence of the Chinese language, absent in Among Us.
The real Among Us, in case you were curious, is currently stuck at 885,000 downloads, but this is the number reached after three months of presence in the Chinese stores. The clone, therefore, is well on its way to surpassing the original in popularity.
Unfortunately for the developers of InnerSloth, China does not have IP protection laws, so its stores are perpetually invaded by several clones of famous Western titles which, in some cases, manage to gain much more notoriety than their original versions. Now do you understand why many developers try to curry favor with the Chinese market from the very beginning?
In your opinion, Among Us deserves to remain “unique”, or is it to be considered a “genre” like Battle Royale and is it therefore legitimate to copy the idea?
