Apple gives Stadia and xCloud the green light for iOS – with a catch
- Stadia, xCloud, and GeForce Now can now appear on iOS
- To do this, the apps must meet certain requirements
- Each game must be downloaded individually
Apple changed its guidelines for the App Store to iOS, clearing the way for streaming services like Google Stadia, xCloud, and GeForce Now.
There is one catch that actually contradicts the purpose of these streaming apps: you have to download each game individually from the App Store.
“Games offered under a subscription to a streaming game service must be downloaded directly from the App Store, must be designed to avoid double payments by a subscriber, and must not penalize customers who are not subscribers.” , is it[called
“Streaming game services may offer a catalog app on the app store that allows users to sign up for the service and find the games in the app store, provided the app complies with all guidelines, including the ability to subscribe with in-app purchases to pay or to use the Sign in with Apple function. All games contained in the catalog app must be linked to an individual app store product page. “
xCloud could appear on iOS now.
Since Apple has so far blocked such apps, Microsoft had finished testing its streaming service xCloud, which will be launched tomorrow in the Xbox Game Pass Ultimate on Android, on iOs a while ago.
Apple’s app store guidelines have recently been the focus of attention because Epic Games purposely violated them and sued Apple (and Google) after the companies threw Fortnite out of their stores.
Last month, Apple said it needed to limit streaming game services because each title needed to be reviewed and approved, which is not the case for streaming films or music.
As I said, the need to download a game contradicts the purpose of a streaming app, but at least the apps would then be usable on iOS. It remains to be seen whether companies will make use of this under these conditions.
