Asus should have made today’s announcements a little earlier in the month but it must be admitted that this beginning of September 2022 was particularly loaded with announcements. Also, the Taiwanese manufacturer preferred to wait for things to calm down to make a double announcement.

We did not necessarily expect it, but we have known for some time that the high-end SoCs of Mediatek no longer have to be ashamed of those of Qualcomm. Also, Asus has just announced its new ROG Phone 6D and ROG Phone 6D Ultimateboth based on the latest SoC Mediatek Dimension 9000+. But that’s not all since we are also hosting an edition Batman.

The Asus ROG Phone 6D and ROG Phone 6D Ultimate

Barely two months after the ROG Phone 6 and ROG Phone 6 Pro which embed a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 SoC, Asus presents its new ROG Phone 6D and ROG Phone 6D Ultimate and we can say that the Taiwanese manufacturer is not going there with the back of the spoon since they ship a MediaTek Dimension 9000+ 5G SoC, RAM that goes to LPDDR5X and 512GB of internal memory in UFS 3.1. If Asus avoids the comparison with Qualcomm, it is 10% more performance compared to the Dimension 9000.

“The pursuit of the ultimate performance and gaming experience has always been central to ROG Phone. With each new model, we constantly strive to surpass ourselves, realizing the spirit of ‘For Those Who Dare’,” said SY Hsu, Co-CEO, ASUS. “We are delighted that this first collaboration with MediaTek has achieved such stunning performance, and we will continue to strive to improve performance incessantly.”

“The rollout of 5G has raised the bar for mobile gaming as users can enjoy super-fast connectivity on the go,” said JC Hsu, corporate vice president and general manager of the MediaTek wireless communications. “MediaTek’s Dimensity 9000+ enables ROG Phone 6D users to enjoy fast and smooth gaming experiences, reliable connectivity, fast refresh rate and immersive visuals, while maximizing battery life. battery “.

If the SoC and memory parts have obviously evolved and we understand that it is for even more performance, the other big innovation of the 6Ds is also the new GameCool 6 cooling system that we find as well as the very new feature AeroActive Portal, a heat dissipation “hatch” that works in conjunction with the AeroActive Cooler 6 and the heat dissipation fins on the vapor chamber, to introduce cool air to the processor. According to Asus, this new technology allows better cooling performance since the thermal surface is multiplied by 92 and the thermal efficiency is increased by 20% when the AeroActive Portal is activated.

Apart from these purely internal changes, for the rest, we take what we already knew with the ROG Phone 6 and ROG Phone 6 Pro from the beginning of the summer. We therefore find a 6.78-inch AMOLED screen with a refresh rate of 165Hz, the two Air Trigger 6, the GameFX audio system with dual speakers, a 3.5mm jack, a 6000mAh battery and the same photo block which includes a main camera with a 50 Megapixel Sony IMX766 sensor. If the ROG Phone 6D offers 12GB of RAM with 256GB of memory, the ROG Phone 6D Ultimate will offer 16GB of RAM with 512GB of memory. Similarly, the 6D will only offer Aura RGB lighting while the 6D Ultimate will feature a color ROG Vision matrix display on the back.

ROG Phone 6D: a MediaTek version for Asus gaming smartphones

A more powerful variant

For these new versions, Asus has therefore chosen a MediaTek processor, the Dimensity 9000+, which on paper promises more power than the Qualcomm chip thanks to its cores clocked at 3.2 GHz. According to the graphics of the Taiwanese firm, the SoC of MediaTek is more efficient than that of the American founder and above all offers better control of the heating. A new GPU is also appearing, the Mali-G710. Finally, 6 GB of RAM is allocated, with 256 or 512 GB of storage depending on the model chosen.

On passive and active cooling, Asus has kept the same characteristics as the classic ROG Phone 6 released at the beginning of the summer. But for its 6D Ultimate model, the company saw things a little differently with the AeroActive Portal, a mechanical flap that opens to release heat. The latter comes in addition to the AeroActive Cooler, the large fan that we had already observed on the ROG Phone 6 Pro in July. As with a PC, Asus has therefore done everything to offer ventilation worthy of the name to its most premium smartphone.

An almost identical shell

On the rest, Asus does not change the formula of the ROG Phone of 2022 one iota. Apart from the finish which goes black (instead of immaculate white), nothing has changed on the technical sheet. Thus, we find the 6.78-inch Oled panel and the photographic alignment consisting of a 50-megapixel main module offering good results. The IPX4 standard is also making a comeback, which is a good thing, even if the protection against water will be less. Even the ROG Vision, this small Oled screen located on the back of the smartphone, is identical on the 6D and on the 6.

In short, these ROG Phone 6D and 6D Ultimate must be considered as “improved” versions of the classic ROG Phone 6s. It remains to be seen whether the performance of MediaTek’s high-end chip will prove to live up to Asus’ promises. We will not fail to pass the smartphones on our test benches to find out for sure.

Question prices, the ROG Phone 6D will be sold at 949 € and the Ultimate version is displayed at 1429 €. The classic version is therefore sold at a lower price than the basic ROG Phone 6, which is not the case with the ROG Phone 6 Ultimate, which therefore becomes the most expensive model from Asus. Let’s add that a Batman version of the ROG Phone 6D will also be on sale next November for €1,329. The collaboration between DC and Asus offers a special model, completely black in the image of the knight of the night. The smartphone is delivered in an original case, branded with the bat logo and integrating accessories such as the Bat-Signal, an aero-case shell with a design inspired by Gotham and finally, a SIM card ejection pin in the shape of a of Batarang. In short, a must have for all Batman fans.

Asus launches the ROG Phone 6D Ultimate, better than the Pro model released in August?

Asus can’t stop and unveils two new high-end smartphones for gamers, the ROG Phone 6D and the ROG Phone 6D Ultimate, just one month after the release of the excellent Asus ROG Phone 6 Pro which we consider to be the best gaming smartphone of the market, neither more nor less. Do these new flagships have the weapons to flood the market right after the release of such good models?

Admittedly, the Asus ROG Phone 6D and 6D Ultimate are powered by a MediaTek Dimensity 9000+ SoC which (slightly) outclasses the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 from Qualcomm… Enough to justify a launch so close to those of the ROG Phone 6 and 6 Pro , released in July/August?

Asus ROG Phone 6D and ROG Phone 6D Ultimate: huge and gray

Barely launched its ROG Phone 6 and ROG Phone 6 Pro, Asus returns with two new high-end gaming smartphones, this time available exclusively in space gray. For one as for the other, we stay on refrigerator dimensions: 173 x 77 x 10.3 mm; 239 grams for the ROG Phone 6D and 247 grams for the ROG Phone 6D Ultimate.

They are big, they are heavy, but it is an undeniable asset for playing (like gaming mice to which weights are added). Especially since the gaming functions of Asus smartphones take into account the movements of the smartphone to trigger in-game actions.

Thus, the size is a solid argument for maintaining a good grip while the weight allows you to control your movements more finely and therefore the actions triggered automatically. We also find on both models the excellent AirTrigger, the tactile triggers which considerably improve the gaming experience.

The Asus ROG Phone 6D and 6D Ultimate have the same two speakers on the front as those of the ROG Phone 6 and 6 Pro, that is to say the best sound currently available on smartphones. However, the manufacturer does not ignore the 3.5 mm jack port, always offered.

Both models are Dual-SIM compatible (without MicroSD slot) and are IPX4 certified against splashes. They come with Android 12 and ROG UI and get two years of Android OS upgrades and at least two years of security updates. That’s less than the minimum three-year warranty for the Asus ROG Phone 6 and 6 Pro – amazing.

What are the differences between these two gaming models?

The two new gaming smartphones from the Taiwanese manufacturer have very few differences, but there is one that is obvious: the AeroActive Portal hatch on the back of the device. In fact, only the Ultimate model has this opening, which allows the smartphone to cool its components more efficiently and to dissipate heat better when connected to the AeroActive Cooler 6 external fan.
