The Gauntlet of Shar is found in the underground section of Thorm Mausoleum, situated south of Last Light Inn. To reach it, follow the road and cross the river to reach Reithwin Town, and then head north. Once you pass the graveyard and reach a waypoint, you’ll encounter Raphael, a devil who proposes a challenge for Astarion. Your task is to defeat one of his rivals lurking within the dungeon.
How to Solve the Mausoleum Puzzle
The first puzzle in the Gauntlet of Shar can be found in the Thorm Mausoleum. According to a book, one must follow General Thorm’s footsteps, from splendor to tragedy to infamy.
Upon reaching the topmost chamber, you’ll find a coffin and three murals, along with several traps. Make sure to ungroup your party so that Astarion can disarm the traps (assuming he has the highest Sleight of Hand skill). Then, interact with the murals in the following order:
- Splendor – The mural shows Moonrise Towers.
- Tragedy – It depicts Thorm mourning his dead daughter.
- Infamy – Thorm sits upon a throne, gazing at his audience with malicious intent.
Solving this puzzle will open the doorway and grant you access to the Gauntlet of Shar proper.
How to Solve the Statue Puzzle
In the initial chamber, you’ll encounter a statue holding an orb. Approaching it will push you back. To solve this puzzle, follow these steps:
- Check the side rooms and pull the levers to lower all the lanterns.
- Be cautious of traps that trigger clouds of darkness, as they will damage characters within the clouds, attacked by hidden rats.
- Once the room is completely dark, you’ll notice a pattern on the floor. Use only one character to crouch-walk and avoid the glowing lines. This will allow you to touch the orb and unlock the doorway.
Balthazar and Battles
After solving the puzzle, you’ll face a battle against several Justiciar undead, including the formidable Umbral Tremors, which can summon more undead if left alive.
Explore the various rooms and chambers in the dungeon, including the locked room to the north with treasure chests and Balthazar’s lair to the left. Be cautious when praying to the statue of Shar in the south, as it can have consequences, especially for Shadowheart’s romance.
Where to Find the Orthon
To continue Astarion’s Pale Elf quest, head right from the waypoint, where you’ll encounter a Displacer Beast. Follow it to the antechamber filled with bones, which also contains Umbral Gems needed to power up the central device.
Here, you’ll face the demon Orthon, trapped in the dungeon for centuries. To succeed, you can either convince the Orthon to leave or defeat it in battle. Looting its ashes will grant you an Infernal Iron and the Hellfire Hand Crossbow.
The Gauntlet of Shar Trials
The next challenge is the various trials found in the Gauntlet of Shar. To start these trials, interact with the Shar altar and have Shadowheart spill her blood. Completing each trial will reward you with another Umbral Gem.
- Self-Same Trial: Face the doppelgangers of your squad, using the same spells and skills. Target your duplicate to avoid ability score reductions until the next long rest.
- Soft-Step Trial: Navigate a small maze patrolled by Shadows. Use Astarion to avoid detection while lockpicking gates and disarming traps.
- Faith-Leap Trial: In a dark room, find ledges that disappear upon approaching. Reach the back-right section, jump to the ledge with the statue, and claim the Umbral Gem.
Concluding the Gauntlet of Shar
With the puzzles and trials completed, you’ll have obtained Umbral Gems to power up the central device. Proceed to the depths, but before that, don’t forget to acquire a special weapon from the Silent Library. Once you have it, continue onward to meet the Nightsong.
