The administration of the Telegram messenger, in test mode, began sending out an offer to a limited number of users to exchange their package of SMS messages for a Premium subscription. Due to this, developers want to send SMS messages to other users in the future for authorization in the mobile application.
According to the proposed conditions, the limit of SMS messages from subscribers that the Telegram messenger will use if an agreement is reached is 150 pieces. It is clarified that SMS messages will be sent to other countries of the world.
As market representatives said, users of the Telegram messenger began receiving messages from the real account of the application administration on February 20 this year. These offers state that the user will be given a Telegram Premium subscription for one month in exchange for sending SMS messages from his phone number. It is clarified that the first such offers began to be received by users from Indonesia, but Russian users also received corresponding messages, which is already known.
The text of the proposal itself states that the messenger needs SMS messages from users in order to send verification codes to other users to access the service.
Journalists from Kommersant emphasize that Russian mobile operators reacted extremely negatively to this news.
In particular, the Megafon company emphasized that many of their subscribers do not spend their monthly SMS packages, but if messages are sent abroad, they will be charged separately.
Tele2 called the scheme proposed by the Telegram messenger not entirely clear and illegitimate, because, as representatives of the mobile operator say, subscribers are obliged to use the communication services provided to them personally, without transferring access to any third parties, especially companies or organizations. And if such access is provided, Tele2 reserves the right to block the sending of such SMS messages.
