Honor 90 test: The mid-range with a captivating screen

For the mid-range market, Honor never pretended always proposing models as good as they are balanced. A way to offer as many people as possible everything they need in a smartphone, at a contained price. This time again, Honor offers with the 90 a good smartphone offering solid elements. adopting a particularly elegant design, significant storage and a magnificent screen, the fact remains that in this sector, competition is fierce. We are thinking in particular of the Nothing Phone (2), which we compared with the famous Honor 90 here. Without further ado, let’s dive into the heart of the test of the Honor 90 :

Excellent ergonomics through an elegant design

The first thing you notice about the Honor 90 is the great elegance of its design. The back of the smartphone is adorned with a shiny effect as reflective as a mirror, offering a very flattering appearance. What we will appreciate the most is its excellent ergonomics through its contained size, thinness and light weight. His body of 7.8mm thick with a size of 161.9 x 74.1 millimeters and his 183 grams make it a perfect smartphone for simple everyday use, it being perfectly usable with one hand.

The placement of the unlock button is excellent, as is its fingerprint sensor which can be easily activated by holding the smartphone with one hand. The combination between the use of the fingerprint reader and facial recognition is very good. Honor brought a few touches of elegance, in particular with its two photo sensors surrounded by rings giving them a distinguished effect. Its very rounded edges give it a “pebble” format that is very pleasant to the touch, also contributing to its flawless ergonomics.

There is no need to say, the Honor 90 is really a beautiful object, offered in the colors Midnight Black, Emerald Green, Diamond Silver. The version presented here is the Midnight Black, oscillating between black and midnight blue when exposed to the sun. Honor has done a real goldsmith’s job with its mid-range.

The number one screen

Just as impressive as its design, next comes the other strong point of the Honor 90, its magnificent 6.7-inch AMOLED screen, with a high resolution of 2664×1200 pixels. With its 120Hz refresh rate and 1600 nits peak brightness in HDR, the screen of the Honor 90 has nothing to envy to that of high-end smartphones. Its technical characteristics allow it to support HDR10+ and HDR certifications from Netflix and Amazon Prime Video.

It’s simple, the expert in smartphone evaluation DxOMark judged the screen of the Honor 90 as the best in the segment of smartphones between 400 and 600 eurostied with the screens of Google Pixel 7 and 7a. In everyday use, it is as sharp as it is fluid, its brightness offering good readability outdoors, even in direct sunlight.

Care also taken in the photo part

With its 200MP main photo sensor and 50MP front camera, the Honor 90 pays particular attention to the photo, an important element for the audience targeted by the smartphone. Globally, the Honor 90 offers good photo performance, particularly in its rendering of macro mode photos, which are impressively accurate.

Regarding the subjects further on, the smartphone will tend to smooth a little too much, the shots sometimes lacking a little sharpness. We will appreciate its natural colorimetry, but also the capabilities of the front camera. This proves to be up to our expectations, by offering in addition a wide-angle mode, particularly useful for taking a group selfie.

However, we also regret the absence of optical image stabilization, present on many smartphones at a similar price, the Honor 90 using electronic image stabilization. It will therefore be necessary to be careful to avoid any movement in order to take the best possible shots. The Honor 90 still turns out to be at the top of the smartphone basket in this range regarding its photo partwhich offers everything you want from a phone.

A very good mid-range, but not without flaws

If the absence of wireless charging is an acceptable compromise to make on a mid-range, we will however regret the lack of waterproof certification. Another moot point, its HONOR MagicOS 7.1 interface based on Android 13, which has some bloatware which by definition, we would do well without.

Also, many proprietary applications offered by Honor present a certain redundancy with Google services. We will still appreciate the function of expanded foldersallowing you to click directly on the application to launch, while taking up less space in the menu than full icons.

The audio part is a great disappointment, we regret that the care given to the screen was done to the detriment the loudspeaker, which is frankly too loud to be usable outside calls. With this look, the Honor 90 would have had exceptional multimedia capabilities, which is not the case here, in particular faced with its lack of stereo sound that is difficult to excuse.

This is probably the reason why Honor is giving away headphones with its Honor 90 launch offer. The smartphone being mainly intended for young people, the manufacturer probably had to think that, in any case, smartphone users will be more inclined to use a real audio system rather than just the loudspeaker.

We will also remember

  • Autonomy of more than one day offered by its 5000 mAh battery.
  • 66W fast charging allowing to go from 0 to 100% in less than an hour
  • Excellent heat managementthis one never having given the impression of heating more than reason in intensive use and in load.
  • sound processor Qualcomm Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 which offers balanced and sufficient performance for everyday use.
  • Its 12 GB of RAM and his very large storage capacity of 512 GB (not expandable).
  • Its canon launch offer proposing a reduction of 100 euros and a pair of Earbuds 3 Pro offered.

A price a bit too high?

If the Honor 90 introductory offer offering a price of 100 euros less as well as a pair of headphones Earbuds 3 Pro actually excellent value for money, then it’s hard to explain its normal price which goes back to 599 euros alone. Even if the Honor 90 will have the advantage of storage with its 512 GB, it should still be remembered that the Google 7a, the great champion of the mid-range category, is sold for 509 euros, or 90 euros less.

A price equal to that of the introductory price of 499 euros would have seemed fairer to us in terms of price placement, making it a real lighter and more ergonomic alternative compared to the Google smartphone. If you want to take advantage of the introductory offerit will be necessary to act quickly, this one ending next Wednesday, July 19th.
