Mayor Eric Adams has denied knowledge of the construction company that is currently under federal investigation in connection with his campaign finances.
During a television interview, Mayor Adams was asked directly if he had any association or previous involvement with the Williamsburg-based KSK construction group.
“Not to my knowledge,” he replied, describing it as one of several organizations that had contributed to his finances.
“I’m not familiar with this organization at all…It’s one of many groups and organizations contributing to the campaign,” Adams added.
KSK Construction is under investigation for alleged involvement in a kickback scheme with the Turkish government aimed at pumping money into Adams’ successful 2021 mayoral campaign, leading to the FBI to search the home of Adams’ top fundraiser on Thursday.
The co-owner of the construction company, Erden Arkan, has not been charged with any wrongdoing.
Adams then revealed that he had been in contact with his main fundraiser, Briana Suggs, 25, whose home in Crown Heights, Brooklyn, was raided by the FBI late last week. as part of an investigation into possible corruption.
“I have communicated with her since this incident took place,” Adams said, noting that her legal team was also in contact with her.
The FBI seized phones, laptops and documents as part of its investigation into Adams’ 2021 campaign.
In a strange twist, it emerged on Friday that a welfare check had been requested for Suggs’ home on Wednesday evening – just hours before the FBI dawn raid.
Currently, no charges have been filed against KSK, Adams, Suggs or anyone else involved in the case.
The investigation appears to focus on potential donors who made donations in their names to conceal the true source, with campaign finance records revealing that 11 KSK employees made nearly identical donations of about $1,250 to Adams’ campaign on the same day in 2021. totaled nearly $14,000.
A straw donor is a donation made illegally with another party’s money under a pseudonym to hide the source of the funds.
Records show Arkan was also an ardent personal supporter of Adams, donating $1,500 to the former cop’s 2021 campaign and hosting a May 2021 fundraiser that brought in nearly $70,000 to his candidacy for mayor.
Despite the ongoing investigation, Mayor Adams has vehemently denied any wrongdoing and expressed confidence in Suggs successfully raising $18 million for his 2021 campaign.
He stressed that his campaign would cooperate fully with the investigation.
“Where there’s smoke, there’s not always fire,” Adams said. “She (Suggs) did an incredible job. »
When news of the raid broke, Mayor Adams was about to embark on a series of meetings with other major city mayors in Washington, DC.
He rushed back to New York, abandoning the meetings.
“Our team informed me that something was going on with campaign staff, and I wanted to be here to make sure we were in full compliance. I have one of the best compliance teams a campaign has ever assembled,” Adams said.
Suggs is the latest Adams associate — and one of several people involved in his fundraising business — to face legal problems in recent months.
In July, six people were indicted in connection with a straw donor plot to divert tens of thousands of dollars to Adams’ campaign.
Former Adams City Buildings Commissioner Eric Ulrich was also indicted in September for using his position to grant favors, including access to the mayor, in exchange for money and other bribes. de-wine. Ulrich and his six co-defendants have pleaded not guilty.
Adams distanced himself from both cases, which were brought in state court and did not directly involve his campaign or administration.
