The series, starring Henry Cavill, was meant to meet the needs of readers, gamers, and viewers who knew nothing about Geralt at the same time. Let’s see if it worked.
There were still a few seasons left in the most successful fantasy series in TV history, when light in the skulls of competitors ’decision-makers ignited roughly at once; they also need a Battle of the Thrones. The most important piece of George RR Martin’s oeuvre was already occupied, so they had to look elsewhere for the dragon laying the golden egg. HBO believes in the antecedents of the Battle of the Thrones, Amazon voted for The Lord of the Rings and Wheel of Time, while Netflix slammed for Narnia, in addition to Andrzej Sapkowski, author of The Witcher (or, if you prefer, Butter) books. also agreed.
It cannot be stressed enough that the written stories serve as the basis for the adaptation, meaningless step-by-step comparison to the RED trilogy of the CD Project. Anyway, it’s hard to abstract from the image we created of the exterior of some of the characters, especially if it was shaped by the games. In some ways, as a layman, it’s perhaps even easier for the viewer, all they have to do is drift with what they see on the screen and little by little put together the pieces of the puzzle that have been dumped on the floor, using the crumbling information crumbs as a point of reference. Hardcore fans will find it harder to swallow the necessary changes without which Ciri and Yennefer could by no means have become a protagonist on a par with Geralt. From this decision follows the seemingly somewhat confusing structure of the first season, it takes a couple of episodes before we notice that the plot moves on not three, but not two, but straight three different timelines.
The present is represented by the storyline of Cirilla; The granddaughter of Queen Cintra is forced to flee when the decadent Nilfgaard, despised and despised by the northern kingdoms, sets up an unparalleled army and methodically subjugates her neighbors. Ciri is a trophy of special and priceless value because of its origin, the young Nifgaard captain entrusted with his capture, Cahir, does not shy away from anything to take him before the emperor. Despite the fact that the large-scale clashes of the season (the choreography and realization of which leave something to be desired) are related to this time plane, which also includes the thread of the season, it clearly lags behind the other two. It’s not up to Freya Allan, who plays Cirit, that his uniqueness is supported solely by his occasionally manifested abilities, and that a few remind him of that. Unfortunately, little of his personality is allowed to flash in the script, and his character development is just beginning.
Geralt’s story breaks down into episodes into separate, self-explanatory details, much like the missions in the game, or the individual short stories. We will easily recognize the source of the current adventure plot, whether the White Wolf is in Blaviken or Temeria. It took a while for me to get used to the silver-white wig on Superman’s head, who noticeably deepened his voice as he spoke, so the end result is reminiscent of Doug ___le’s shaping. I was skeptical, but the fact is that Henry Cavill is a great Geralt, he moves, he speaks, he behaves the way we would expect, and most importantly, he fights anyway. While the execution of major clashes has been disappointing, the scenes in which the Rivians are forced to draw their swords are quite parades and sufficiently brutal. The overt depiction of violence (and, if we are already here, sexuality) is not far from the series, but it does not go beyond exaggerations like the Battle of the Thrones. It may be noticeable to viewers that Geralt always carries only one sword with him, but that does not mean that they have exiled the trademark of the Butterflies from the adaptation. When he clashes with a knockout in the opening scene of the first part, he rotates the silver blade, and when human opponents attack him, he has another sword.
I deliberately left to the end Yengerfer Vengerberg and his decades-long history, which was rewritten and expanded at the discretion of showrunner Lauren Schmidt Hissrich. The injured-born girl is made especially sympathetic by the vicissitudes she has suffered, the price she pays to gain the coveted power and beauty. For this, of course, the convincing portrayal of Mother Chalotra, who has been quite creepily deformed for the sake of the role, is essential.
It was a difficult task for the creators of The Witcher, because we can see from the example of Star Wars movies that it is terribly difficult to meet the expectations of the fans, but most of the obstacles were well taken. I also appreciated the wink and the inclusion of popular second- and third-line characters (including Triss and Kökörcsin, whose Polish nickname Jaskiert has been preserved) in the story. Due to the brevity of the season, unfortunately, the primary plot begins to become interesting just as it ends, but he has done his job in outlining the outlines of a world that is still alien to many viewers. Who are the buttermen and how are they “born”? How dangerous is their occupation, and why is it fatal if, on the basis of misinformation, they are unprepared to follow in the footsteps of a monster? How do people relate to other people? Why is there a wizard or sorceress advisor next to each crowned main? And so on … The spectacle (except for the sometimes weak cgi), the mood, the music, the scenery (except for the lame Nilfgaard armor), the acting ensemble, if not catapult the The Witcher to the forefront, by all means it makes it enjoyable, but for the time being, the boots taken from the best seasons of the Battle of the Thrones are still on their feet. Once the second stage has been set up, there will be a way to correct the mistakes and tackle the more serious themes (political games, racism, social inequalities) that are so prominent in books and games as well, but this time pushed into the background.
