Demon’s Souls: NPC Quests in the Nexus – Boldwin, Mephistopheles, Thomas, Merchants

Like all other Souls games, Demon’s Souls is also full of companions, dealers and other NPCs who sometimes cross your path here, sometimes appear there, sometimes friendly, sometimes hostile to the point of blood. Over the course of the game, you can meet (and miss) several dozen characters. Some stay in the Nexus from the start and don’t move a meter away from there. Others only show up under special conditions, for example with a special global trend. It is worth visiting these NPCs and, if available, completing their small personal quests – there is usually a nice reward at the end for the effort.

Talk to each character you are preparing to chat several times until it repeats itself at some point. From time to time their dialogues change or expand and they may relate to things that you have accomplished. Attacking an NPC is considered hostility and will not be tolerated for long. Most characters put up with this once or twice and then take up arms themselves to fight back. They stay in this state even if you rest, leave the level, and come back. As long as you don’t kill them, you can apologize to the statue of reflection in the Nexus and reset their aggressive state. In short: If you have “only” attacked an NPC, this is not the end of the world.

The following guide is your guide for meeting them. We show which requirements have to be met, how to solve the NPC quests and which rewards are waiting for them. Note: Even if many characters take up a position in the Nexus sooner or later – or at least stop by for a moment – the guide lists them in the worlds in which you meet them for the very first time.

NPCs and quests in the Nexus

Blacksmith Boldwin

  • He is the first blacksmith in the game and available from the start. In the Nexus he sits next to warehouse manager Thomas and can repair your equipment.
  • He also sells basic supplies, weapons, and armor, and can make simple upgrades with hard stone and sharp stone (for more blacksmithing trails and farming tips, see Demon’s Souls: Forging and Upgrades).
  • If you kill Boldwin, he will drop the hands of God, a two-part hand weapon. From now on he is no longer available for repair or blacksmithing work and you are dependent on the services of his brother Ed in the forge area (2-1).

Warehouse clerk Thomas

  • Also at the start from the start. He sits in the Nexus and is happy to receive all equipment that you do not want to carry with you (such as smith’s shards that no one has to lug around as both blacksmiths have access to your warehouse). You can store 99 units of stackable items, for example grass and stones for forging. Up to 999 units of arrows and bolts can be stored with Thomas.
  • Bring him the jade hair ornament from section 1-1 (see Gates of Boletaria) and he will reward you with the ring of colossal strength.
  • If you kill Thomas, he will drop the ring (unless you have already completed his short, touching family quest), but then you can no longer store items and have to lug around for the entire game time, which is important to you.

Black virgin

  • After defeating the boss Phalanx in the section Gates of Boletaria (1-1) you can bring collected souls to the Virgo and use them to level up.
  • Every time you come back to the Nexus, she can stand or sit in a different place. You can always find them around the Keilsteine (sometimes with Thomas and Boldwin, sometimes on the other side, sometimes in front of the Keilstein to world 3).
  • Virgo is immortal, so don’t worry if you accidentally attack her. She will never react hostile and you can level with her forever.
  • At the end of the game, after you’ve finished the finale under the Nexus, you can unlock the good ending or cruelly kill the virgin to preserve her soul. In the New Game Plus you can buy the magic soul suction from the witch Yuria.

The mighty one

  • This nondescript monk sits at the top of the Nexus. You only have to go to him briefly, right after defeating the phalanx. Follow one of the outer staircases to a circular room full of monks. Only one is still alive, recognizable by the burning candle in front of it. Speak to him after you have completed the gates of Boletaria to unlock the other four keystones.
  • He asks you a question the first time you meet. Answer “yes”. Talk to him again with a white tendency and he will give you the friend’s ring.
  • The mighty one is immortal, so save yourself an attack.

Despondent warrior

  • This guy is one of your first NPC encounters in Demon’s Souls. From the start he crouches depressed in the Nexus, directly in front of the first wedge, and points you to the section of the gates of Boletaria.
  • Talk to him multiple times after defeating bosses and obtaining their demon souls. He warns you not to fall into the same trap as King Allant. You will also learn more about his desperate mental state. The guy really understands how to pull others down.
  • After defeating the tower knight in section 1-2, his last dialogue will be unlocked. It then disappears from the nexus, leaving behind a soul to collect.

Freke’s apprentice

  • After defeating the phalanx in the first section, he appears in the Nexus and teaches you simple spells for the first few hours of play until you have better alternatives (see locations of the spells).
  • He only offers you his services if your magic value is at least 10 points.
  • He reports several times about his master Freke, who is trapped in a cell in the hope dungeon of the tower of Latria (world 3-1), and asks you to save him.
  • He will attack you hostile and brave if you attack either him or his master Freke (and defends himself with soul arrows).

Disciples of God

  • After the phalanx, he appears in the nexus and teaches you simple miracles (see localities of all miracles).
  • He will only make his offer available to you if your will is at least 10 points.
  • After saving Saint Urbain from the path of rituals in section 4-2, he leaves the Nexus and only comes back in NG +.

Devotee of God

  • This blond-haired lady from Sankt Urbain’s entourage sits in the Nexus from the start and talks about a mysterious stone. Above all, it is a good source of lore about the tragic events surrounding King Allant and otherwise has no great playful significance.
  • Talk to her if your will is more than 20 points and she will give you 1x Reiner Blade Stone and 2x Ephemeral Eye Stone.
  • She will attack you with a pickaxe if you turn Sankt Urbain against you.

Mephistopheles

  • This devious character only shows up when you can show a dark character tendency. You must also have freed Yurt, the mute chief, from his cage in Upper Latria (3-2) and killed.
  • Mephistopheles gives you a series of murder assignments, which are very simply about killing NPCs in the Nexus. After killing each target, speak to them again to receive a reward.
  • Needless to say, the people killed will remain dead until the New Game Plus. That means you can no longer change your imprinted spells or wonders when Freke and his apprentice or Sankt Urbain are gone.
  • The murder targets of Mephistopheles are: Sankt Urbain and his followers, Freke and apprentice, Biorr twin catch, Patches, Ostrava, Yuria.
  • The murder of Yuria brings you the ring of the enemy. After all the attacks are over and you have spoken to Mephistopheles again, she attacks you.
