The next flagship of Google is still much talked about. While the first rumors about it were launched as soon as its predecessor was released last fall, the Pixel 7 should not take too long to point the nose. We even think we now know what the exact date of its arrival in store would be…
Among the main manufacturers in the mobile telephony industry, each has its (or even its) major annual meeting(s) to unveil its new shock smartphones. Xiaomi has been opening the ball for some time, revealing its flagships for the following year in December. This is followed by Samsung, which traditionally presents its Galaxy S to us at the start of the year, then its Galaxy Z during the summer. After which, it is Apple that is expected at the turn, with the formalization of its precious iPhone which always takes place at the start of the school year, in September. And finally, Google is following closely, unveiling its famous Pixels in October.
Also, while the Web ignites on future smartphones stamped with the bitten apple, there are also many rumors concerning those of the other American giant.
At the time, the Californian company gave only a vague idea of its release date, “this fall”. Which was not surprising since, as we have seen, this is the period when Google traditionally presents its flagships. Today, as the deadline is fast approaching, we believe we know exactly what day this Pixel 7, and its big brother called Pixel 7 Pro of course, will come out of their box.
THE PIXEL 7, BUT ALSO THE PIXEL WATCH UNVEILED ON OCTOBER 6, 2022?
Drum roll: the Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro would, according to him, be available in stores on October 13. Their pre-order would be launched exactly a week before, on October 6th. Note that he says he gets this information from “sources with a very good reputation“, but that as long as nothing is official, all of this remains to be taken with a grain of salt. That being said, given the habits of the American manufacturer, the dates he puts forward seem quite consistent.
Finally, note that the Pixel 7 should not be the only products to be presented at the next Google conference, which should actually take place in October. We expect in particular to discover at the same time the very first connected watch of the brand, which should naturally be called Pixel Watch.
Google Pixel 6a test: at less than 500 euros, it has two qualities that other smartphones do not have
After being deprived of the Pixel 5a last year in Europe, Google has decided this year to market the Pixel 6a on the old continent. It presents itself as a “more affordable” solution than the brand’s high-end models, the Pixel 6 and 6 Pro. The Pixel 6a is primarily aimed at users looking for the “Pixel experience” which translates into a great camera and an uncompromising software experience, but who don’t have more than €459 to put into a smartphone.
Unfortunately for Google, competition is fierce in this price segment. Indeed, we find very good references such as the Samsung Galaxy A53, the Nothing Phone (1), the iPhone SE 2022 or the OnePlus Nord 2. To stand out, the Pixel 6a relies on the Google Tensor chip of its big brothers. It optimizes the software experience and improves photo quality thanks to artificial intelligence.
Beyond its Google Tensor chip, the Pixel 6a is equipped with 6 GB of RAM memory, a 6.1-inch Full HD AMOLED panel with a refresh rate of 60 Hz, an IP67 waterproof certification and a dual 12-megapixel photo sensor for wide-angle and ultra-wide-angle. Its autonomy is ensured by a 4410 mAh battery, with the possibility of using a “fast” charge of 18W. Nothing impressive on paper then, but let’s not draw too hasty a conclusion…
Google Pixel 6a test: the little one that has almost everything of a big one
The Pixel 6a, the “little” last of the 6th generation Pixel family, has just been released. Despite its size, the newborn is in great shape and is admired by its 6 and 6 Pro brothers. For 2022, the whole family is present on the old continent. A Pixel 6a that does not intend to be on the feet of its brothers, nor its mid-range comrades.
PRICE AND AVAILABILITY
The Google Pixel 6a has been officially on sale since July 28, 2022 from the Google site for a public price of 459 euros. However, it was already found with operators. It only exists in one configuration: 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. The American behemoth thus intends to establish itself in Europe on the market of intermediate smartphones, whereas it had abandoned it last year with the Google Pixel 5a. Another highlight, the price of 459 euros for a mid-range phone is rather an aggressive price for placing on the market. In the United States, it is sold for 449 dollars, therefore at the same price as its ancestor Pixel 5a.
But to compete for the title of the best mid-range smartphone, Google has a lot to do. Not only does it find itself up against its eternal rival Samsung with the Galaxy A53 5G (launched at 459 euros, but around 370€ at the time we are testing), the Realme GT 2 (80 euros more expensive), the Motorola G200 ( -90 euros) and even to the iPhone Se 2022 (60 euros more expensive).
To boost its sales, Google offers its Pixel Buds A-series wireless headphones (worth around 100 euros) with any purchase of a Pixel 6a. The proposition is tempting, but is the Google Pixel 6a the best Android smartphone for less than 500 euros? Answer in the following lines.
Under the psychological bar of 500 euros, the Google Pixel 6a has everything to please on paper: 128 GB of storage, a beautifully crafted AMOLED screen, a powerful processor, a large battery and high-end waterproofing. However, it ignores the microSD slot or the large photo sensors. In addition to the classic charging cable and the traditional SIM card pin, Google has included a USB type B to USB type C converter. The transfer of data to an old Android smartphone (with a USB-C connector) for faster, without using WiFi. An attention that deserves to be underlined.
A DESIGN THAT REUSES THAT OF PIXEL 6
Did you like the original design of the Pixel 6 and 6 Pro, with its black bar hiding the photo and flash sensors? If so, you’ll like the Pixel 6a one. From a distance, the resemblance is such that the looks of the 3 6th generation Google phones are almost the same. In hand, the (subtle) differences reveal themselves. The Pixel 6a is slightly more compact than a Pixel 6 Pro but also a Pixel 6. To save some money, but in use, the key / phone mix or slips on the floor are not forgiving. Entry-level Google phones are prone to scratches. The screen is protected by Corning Gorilla Victus glass, like its big brother Pixel 6.
In addition, the black bar protrudes from the hull of the smartphone by about 1mm (more than a bank card). A millimeter doesn’t seem like much, but it’s a lot. This micro-growth undergoes multiple frictions in a jeans pocket or systematically first touches the surface on which the telephone is placed. A shell is therefore more than recommended to preserve your Pixel 6a in the long term. Google provided us with a plastic shell that fits the smartphone perfectly (and protects the lenses and back from scratches)… but it costs 29 euros on the official Google store.
