DOTA 2 will be free to play … with a twist
DOTA 2, Valve’s highly anticipated game in the MOBA genre (think League of Legends or Heroes or Newerth), will be free to play. Gabe Newell, head of Valve, confirmed this during a podcast. Gabe immediately said that we can expect some twists to the original free-to-play model, which often includes a shop where you can buy skins or XP boosts.
However, Gabe remained vague about these “twists”. He said the team had mainly thought about how to value contributions from ordinary people to the community. It would be a kind of reward model, where players who, for example, are a good guide for newer players, would receive a reward. Gabe would also like to extend the system to other games. He wants gamers to be able to take advantage of collective actions by other gamers, and would like to use Steam to do so. A noble goal, we think.
