Fallout 76: regenerate action points and increase AP – that’s how it works

In Fallout 76 you have to keep a constant eye on the most diverse values, but one of the most important are yours Action points. For the sake of simplicity, this is often called AP Abbreviated attribute basically affects every action that requires physical exertion from your vault dweller.

For example, your action points shrink constantly when you sprint via L3. It is the same if you hold your breath while aiming in order to be able to shoot more precisely, which is especially essential when using sniper rifles and other long-range weapons. Every attack in VATS mode also deducts a few AP from you. Strong (melee) attacks even consume this value in the regular course of the game.

The problem: If you run out of action points in Fallout 76 during one of these actions, the activity is automatically canceled or blocked. We hardly need to find examples of situations in which such a thing can make the difference between life and death. The most important tip is therefore: Always pay attention to your AP and, if possible, make sure you have at least a few up your sleeve for dicey opportunities.

Without AP you are in a fix: You need 76 action points for almost every relevant action in Fallout.

This is usually not that difficult, as used meters regenerate automatically if you do not perform any of the actions described above (i.e. none that use up AP). However, if the auto regeneration does not start, there can be various reasons:

  • You are thirsty or hungry.
  • You are carrying too much weight and have exceeded your maximum carrying capacity.
  • You accidentally carry out one of the mentioned actions after all. It happens particularly often, for example, that you just keep sprinting, lost in thought (which is anything but surprising given the snail-like regular speed of movement).

By the way: If your torso is crippled, this also results in slower regeneration.

Better than constantly having to take a forced break to regenerate, it is of course to have a generally higher supply of action points available. There are several ways and means to achieve this:

  • When leveling up SPECIAL, increase your agility to increase your overall AP.
  • On the other hand, if you improve your stamina, you will use fewer action points while sprinting.
  • Equip the “Action Boy / Girl” skill to use less AP during VATS attacks.
  • There are different consumables that give you different bonuses to AK, agility or stamina. It’s best to always have a few in your luggage.
  • While many mutations tend to have negative effects, there are also a handful of positive effects such as increased Action Points
