Sony just announced that Fortnite is getting a cross-play open beta today. After an ‘extensive evaluation process’, Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) has found a way to enable online play with Xbox One and Switch gamers, among others.

Fortnite is getting a cross-platform open beta today! SIE boss John Kodera has announced this on the PlayStation Blog and says he is aware that everyone has had to wait a long time for this news; he greatly appreciates your patience. Kodera continues to announce an open beta across all platforms where Fortnite is playable, so PS4, Switch, Xbox One, PC, Android or iOS.

SIE hopes to give you the best experience of all platforms because yes, if you go cross platform then you have to with PlayStation:

We see the beta as an opportunity to conduct thorough testing that ensures cross-platform play is best on PlayStation, while being mindful about the user experience from both a technical and social perspective.

Kodera adds that SIE is committed to responding to the needs of gamers around the world, for whom the addition of a cross-platform experience is of great value. The move to cross-platform play is logically a big one, but Kodera says PlayStation is ready:

We have completed a thorough analysis of the business mechanics required to ensure that the PlayStation experience for our users remains intact today, and in the future, as we look to open up the platform.

Opening up the PlayStation platform for multi-platform multiplayer also means a major change in SIE policy. Further details, including the duration of the beta and what it will all contain, will be announced by SIE at a later date.
