The Battle Royale genre, in recent times, is literally dominating the market and a series of software houses, more or less internationally known, have proposed their own interpretation of this young but so successful genre.
Of all, however, Fortnite: Battle Royale was certainly the most successful product and became, in a short time, the gaming phenomenon of the year. All this is due, for sure, to its free-to-play nature, to the continuous support from Epic Games but also to some unique and peculiar mechanics introduced for the occasion by the developer.
The construction system of Fortnite, in fact, represents its distinctive trait, the ace in the hole that has decreed its resounding success globally. An apparently simple mechanics but which hides a stratification and a complexity out of the ordinary.
We at SamaGame have created this complete guide precisely to explain how the articulated system set up by the American giant works, pausing to analyze the differences between the materials, the editing of the structures and much more.

Basics of building and setting commands
Let’s start by saying that in Fortnite: Battle Royale there are 4 different types of structures to combine and modify to create practically any type of construction you can think of: the wall, the floor, the staircase and the roof.
Fortnite by default assigns the construction mode to a specific key (Q on PC, Circle on Ps4, B on Xbox One and A on Nintendo Switch) but it will be important for you, in case you play with a pad, change some settings to make the constructions more immediate.
First go to the settings menu, go to the “Controller” tab and, in the command layout selection screen, choose “Construction Professional”. Unlike the basic control scheme which requires you to scroll between walls, stairs and floors with the pressure of the back bumpers, in fact, the Construction Professional assigns each of the four types of structure to the triggers and the back keys, in order to make the construction faster and more incisive during the fights resulting, therefore, essential for competition at high levels.
In addition to this, remember to activate, again from the settings screen, the options “Turbo construction” which allows you to build the various structures by holding down the dedicated key and “Automatic material modification” to automatically switch from one material to another when the previous wears out.
Guide to materials: differences and sources
In Fortnite: Battle Royale there are three different types of materials, each with unique properties that make them suitable for certain situations rather than others. Let’s go and see them in detail:
- Wood : The most common material in the game, it can be made from trees, fences, barrels, crates, etc. It has a placement time of 5 seconds for each structure with an initial health of 100 HP and a final health of 200 HP when placed.
- Stone : material more resistant than the previous one and quite widespread. It can be picked up by hitting walls and rocks with the pickaxe, has a placement time of 12 seconds, an initial health of 90 HP and a final health of 300 HP at the end of the placement process.
- Metal : The slowest material in placement but also the most resistant of all. The structures take 20 seconds to place and have an initial health of 80 HP which increases to 400 at the end of the process.
Knowing the placement times and the resistance of the various materials is very important to understand which of these to choose in specific situations.
Wood, for example, thanks to its rapid construction times, is certainly the most suitable for quickly defending against enemy assaults, especially in the initial stages of combat. Metal, on the other hand, we advise you to keep it for the last act of the fight, when a good positioning of the structures can make the difference between life and death and a more resistant material can give you more time to aim and deliver the blow. of grace.
Always remember, as a general rule, to use harder materials for the base of your structures if you want to avoid making close encounters with the ground from dizzying heights: given the enormous fall damage of Fortnite, it could cost you really dearly.
Some examples of typical Fortnite structures: Battle Royale
Once you are familiar with the construction system and the properties of the various materials, what you will need to learn is to build the right structure for various types of circumstances. Below you can find a list of some of the most used facilities in the game community.
“Anti-panic” wall : this type of construction consists solely of a vertical wall, which can be placed by pressing a single button, which guarantees a series of tactical advantages that should not be underestimated. First of all, it guarantees protection from enemy shots that will necessarily have to break down the wall before they can hit you. In addition, it will allow you to breathe from a particularly challenging fight by reloading your weapon or healing yourself from injuries. In short, it is a simple but fundamental element.
“Anti-panic” ramp : as in the previous case, this construction can also make the difference between life and death but is slightly more complex to position. In essence, it is a staircase whose sides are protected by walls, in order to have an advantage in terms of height while remaining covered on the sides from any sudden attacks. Also, in case you are equipped with a sniper rifle, the ramp can give you a cleaner line of fire when you need to attempt the shot from a distance.
V-shaped ramp : in this case, we have a ramp consisting of two stairways protected by walls on all sides. Placed on the top of a medium-height tower, it guarantees almost total coverage at 360 degrees and protects you from enemy blows thanks to the blind spot at the meeting between the two stairs. Great for snipers, especially in the later stages of the battle, to get a complete view of the battlefield.
Sniper Tower : In case you have good aim and are equipped with a sniper rifle, the tower is definitely the building for you. Start by building four walls around you, then build a staircase in the center to reach a higher level, place four more walls and continue like this to the desired height.
Once you get high enough, build a V-shaped ramp, as described above to get the maximum view on your opponents but be careful because if the enemies break down the base of the structure you will inevitably fall towards your destiny: not exaggerate with the height!
Nursing Rooms : This is certainly one of the most important constructions in the game. The nursing rooms are a kind of bunker to hide in when your health is at a critical state in order to have time to heal and are made up of four walls enclosed by a pyramid ceiling at the top.
The downside is that they attract enemy fire many times as they suggest to the opponent that their occupant is dying but, at the very least, they give you time to heal, apply shields, and possibly return fire. effectively.
Obviously, the Fortnite gameplay formula does not limit the player’s creativity to standard elements provided by the developer and, on the contrary, encourages the user to create always different structures based on the situations that arise. However, knowing some of the typical constructions described above can save your life on more than one occasion.
Our advice, therefore, is to practice using the “Playground” mode recently added in order to master the Fortnite construction system in total tranquility.
Traps and other placeable objects
Once you become proficient with structures, adding traps and other items to your constructions is the next step we recommend you take. The traps , placed in a conscious and rational, can result in lethal surprises for your opponents who may be killed in an instant just because they have not been quite careful where they put their feet.
Traps can be found, just like weapons and other objects, by wandering around the game map, opening Chests, interacting with Llamas, etc … and they give a truly remarkable tactical advantage. Traps can be of different types and we have listed them all below.
Lethal Trap : positioned in points that are difficult to see in the eyes of the opponents, they will activate as they pass, inflicting a very large amount of damage (well 150 HP).
Launch Pad : Available only in the Epic variant, the Launch Pad will obviously be less common than Lethal Traps and has a decidedly different effect. It does not inflict any damage but allows the user to jump high and use the hang glider again, in order to cover long distances in a short time and, potentially, quickly reach the Safe Zone.
Bounce Trap : as in the previous case, also the Bounce Trap does not inflict damage on players but can be useful for a multitude of uses. First, it allows you to take long leaps without taking fall damage but can also be used to throw enemies into traps or send them high to expose them to sniper fire.
Healing Bonfire : In a diametrically opposite way to the Death Trap, the Healing Bonfire heals the player for 2HP per second for 25 seconds, for a total of 50 Health Points. Used in combination with the Healing Room, seen above, it can be a great way to survive the most intense battles proposed by Fortnite.
As we said at the beginning, Fortnite: Battle Royale offers a more layered and complex construction system than you might think. There is, in fact, a special button that allows you to edit the structures already placed in order to create others or to modify the function of the current ones.
Each of the four main structures (walls, stairs, floors and ceilings) is made up of a series of tiles that can be viewed by pressing the editing button. Furthermore, by interacting with the tiles, it is possible to transform in appearance and, consequently, in function. Here is an explanatory table of the game’s construction editor.

Other useful information on constructions
Buildings do not necessarily have to be used for defensive purposes but can also be used to reach otherwise inaccessible high places or to have cleaner lines of fire to take down opponents.
Learning how to build structures quickly can be the difference between being engulfed in the Storm or surviving – using materials to build a ladder and climb a hill to get to the Safe Zone quickly can be a good idea.
Be careful when collecting materials as the noise you make can be heard from long distances. Our advice is to first ensure that the area is cleared, eliminating opponents in range, before starting to accumulate materials.
When picking, aim for the blue circle that appears at the object you are hitting to acquire a small amount of bonus materials.
