The news was previously leaked, but now it has been confirmed. Epic Games is not going to offer Fortnite for Android phones through the Google Play Store.
Epic Games is having success with Fortnite across all platforms and the battle royale game will also make its debut on Android devices soon. However, players will not be able to download the game from the Google Play Store as they are normally used to.
In a conversation with The Verge, Tim Sweeney, CEO at Epic Games, indicated that the company will not sell Fortnite through the Play Store, but that it will be available through their own website. One of the big reasons is that Epic Games wants to be directly connected with the consumer. In addition, they are not entirely happy to give up 30% of their winnings with every purchase of the game.
Epic wants to have a direct relationship with our customers on all platforms where that’s possible. The great thing about the Internet and the digital revolution is that this is possible, now that physical storefronts and middlemen distributors are no longer required.
Sweeney also indicates that the Android version of Fortnite will eventually be available worldwide, except for China. Epic is working on a release that they want to release separately for Chinese players.
There is no release date yet for when Fortnite will be released on Android, but rumors have it that the game will be released on August 24 at the same time as the Samsung Galaxy Note 9.
