To succeed in this challenge, you will have to start by find three ice cream cones ! This is an item that can be difficult to find when you don’t know where to go. These ice cream cones are usually found in chests or on the ground, but also near the NPC P’ Cornet in exchange for ingots.

NASA details its plan to bring Mars samples back to Earth in 2033

For more than a year and a half, the Perseverance robot has begun its odyssey on the red planet, already collecting 11 samples of Martian rock. But a new, even larger (and more delicate) program is being prepared by NASA teams. Because once the rock has been extracted, it must be successfully transported to Earth in order to study its details, in search of traces of ancient life.

As such, the space agency detailed, this Wednesday, July 28, its plan on how around thirty samples of Martian rock should be brought back to the blue planet in 2033.

Initially, NASA planned to send a second rover to Mars, which would have picked up the samples deposited by Perseverance to take them to a lander. The latter should leave Earth in 2028 to arrive on Mars in the middle of 2030. It will carry on its back a mini-rocket called Mars Ascent Vehicle, a robotic arm and two small helicopters.

A delicate mission

But ultimately, that second rover simply won’t exist. Instead, Perseverance itself will join the lander and perform the various stages. Among them: sample recovery. This operation will be carried out using the robotic arm brought by the lander and built by the European Space Agency (ESA). But caution is always in order, a fallback solution has been provided in case Perseverance finds itself immobilized.

A first helicopter, named Ingenuity, is already on Mars. Its performance has exceeded all expectations: it has already made 29 flights, instead of the five initially planned. The two new helicopters will be a little heavier, equipped with wheels to be able to move on the ground as well, and a small arm allowing them to recover the samples, which can weigh up to 150 grams. These small pieces of rock will be dropped on the ground by Perseverance then recovered by helicopters and deposited at the foot of the lander in a few days. They would also be collected there by the robotic arm, which can extend up to two meters, to be placed in the mini-rocket.

So far, NASA planned to send another rover to Mars, which would have picked up the samples deposited by Perseverance to take them to a lander. On the latter will be a mini-rocket, ready to take off the samples in orbit, in 2031.

Eventually, this second rover will simply not exist. Instead, Perseverance, which has demonstrated its good performance, will itself directly join the rocket (named Mars Ascent Vehicle).

The samples will be retrieved from Perseverance using a robotic arm, built by the European Space Agency (ESA), and integrated into the lander as previously planned. But caution is always in order, a fallback solution has been provided in case Perseverance finds itself immobilized.

An arrival on Mars planned for 2030

The lander, which should take off in the summer of 2028 and arrive on Mars in the middle of 2030, will thus carry on its back (in addition to the mini-rocket and the robotic arm) two small helicopters. A first helicopter, named Ingenuity, is already on Mars. Its performance has exceeded all expectations: it has already made 29 flights, instead of the five initially planned.

Once in space, the samples will finally be transferred to an orbiter previously positioned around Mars, which is scheduled to take off from Earth in 2027. Once the cargo has been recovered, this orbiter will return to Earth to come land in the Utah desert in 2033.

Perseverance carries a total of 43 tubes. A dozen will soon be deposited on Martian soil to constitute an emergency reserve. The other 30 will be those destined to be recovered.

NASA and ESA have a very bold new scenario for Mars sample returns!

Since touching down in Jezero Crater on February 18, 2021, the Perseverance rover collected eleven samples of carrots of rock and an atmospheric sample. While the NASA rover continues its collection, on Earth, the mission that will bring them back to Earth continues.

Yesterday, NASA and ESA announced a new mission architecture and a new scenario on Mars for the return of these samples. Thomas Zurbuchen, Associate Administrator of the Science Missions Directorate of the US Space Agency, noted that “significant and beneficial changes have been made to the program, which can be directly attributed to the recent successes of Perseverance at Jezero and the astonishing performance of Martian helicopter.

Concretely, NASA wishes to use Perseverance to bring the samples to the MAV (Mars Ascent Vehicle), the rocket which will be used to send them to orbit martian. The European Space Agency’s Fetch rover, built by Airbus, which was to retrieve the samples and bring them to the MAV is therefore abandoned, as is the lander which was to bring it to Mars. Depending on the Perseverance rover alone to transport the samples is therefore a huge technological gamble.

Two helicopters in support of Perseverance

The most surprising announcement is NASA’s decision to use two helicopters for this mission! Their design was inspired by that ofIngenuity who made 29 flights to Mars and survived more than a year beyond his duration initially planned life. NASA did not detail the role and mode of operation of these two flying machines, explaining only that they will be used as a backup to recover the samples if Perseverance did not manage to bring them to the MAV. It’s still a mission robotics very complex to implement.
