With barely a month and a half to go until Red Dead Redemption 2 is released, it is now starting to itch! And if you weren’t hyped enough, we have a serial to really get in the mood. Time for part two: games!

While we wait for a second gameplay trailer, Rockstar is releasing more information little by little, and previews are just around the corner (Red Dead Redemption 2, for example, also appears on the cover of the upcoming PU!). The hype train rumbles on and has now clearly arrived at the stop where you have to ask yourself: do I want to know everything, or am I avoiding every piece of news from now on, in order to dive into the game as ‘fresh’ as possible? In the latter case, you can go to other things to get the mood going. Movies last month, games today!

If you have a PlayStation 4, chances are you are currently playing Spider-Man, if only to kill time until October 26th. If you want to be in the right theme anyway, you can of course play Red Dead Redemption again. For example, backwards compatible and razor sharp on Xbox One, or even in 4K on Xbox One X! If you have secretly played it twenty times and you are looking for something else, then read on.

The Oregon Trail

No, this article will not be a history lesson in games set in the Wild West, that this is the first Western game ever is a coincidence. What is no coincidence, however, is that The Oregon Trail was originally designed as an educational game in 1971 and is therefore an excellent introduction to this world! While Red Dead Redemption revolves around the end of an era, The Oregon Trail is about the beginning, when the first pioneers ventured en masse on the dangerous journey west. You do a lot of things that come back in RDR 2: hunt, trade, make sure that your (slightly less criminal) travel company does not die in harsh conditions … Still fine to play by the way, directly from your browser, right here! My scrore at the end of the trip: 2678 and everyone is alive!

theHunter: Call of the Wild

Speaking of hunting, why not sharpen your hunting instinct with a solid hunting sim? Okay, it probably won’t be as serious and hardcore as in theHunter: Call of the Wild, but what is certain is that in Red Dead Redemption 2 we will have to shoot a lot of animals again, and now also with a bow and arrow! If you have to, then in such a beautiful wilderness as in theHunter, thanks to the engine of Avalanche Studios.

If, like me, you hope for some more / better stealth gameplay in Red Dead Redemption 2, you can already start practicing in Desperados, Desperados 2 and / or Helldorado! As RDR is sometimes called GTA with horses, you can think of Desperados as Commandos in the Wild West. You know, top-down real-time tactics, where you have to keep an eye on those green viewcones if you want to survive. Not the most accessible gameplay, but super atmospheric, exciting and detailed! Coincidentally, Desperados 3, from the makers of Shadow Tactics, was announced last month, and it looks mighty good too!

Hard West

For when you prefer to aim as little as possible yourself and like to solve everything with Dead Eye. In turn-based tactics game Hard West you do not depend on your own gun skills, but on that of your characters. And a bit of your strategic insight, of course. The gameplay is almost the same as in XCOM, but Hard West is actually much cooler as it is with cowboys. It also contains a bit more supernatural things than the average Western, but if you liked Undead Nightmare, then you will soon feel at home. By the way, are we looking forward to such a Zombie expansion for Red Dead Redemption 2?

I only add this one because Graddus always says that he thinks this is ‘the best cowboy game ever’. Better than Red Dead Redemption? I haven’t played it, but that sounds pretty unbelievable. Anyway, it’s a fancy trailer!

Call of Juarez: Gunslinger

Rockstar hasn’t hinted at it yet, but since it worked really well in GTA V, Red Dead Redemption 2 could get it like this: a first-person mode! In that case, it will have to compete against the excellent shooter Call of Juarez: Gunslinger, although Jokko was not really happy about it in his review at the time. Well, if you associate Western with grand, deep adventures, then Call of Juarez may indeed be a bit too much arcade, but that should not spoil the hard gun fun.

My horse and Me 2

As you know, Red Dead Redemption 2 will be much more about the bond between you and your horse. To warm up for this, you can of course go for a ride on Epona, Roach, Shadowmere, Agro, or whatever your favorite virtual tuber is. And yet, to really bring out the Horse May… er, I mean, I can’t recommend a better game than My Horse and Me 2. Great horses, so many customization options and a dramatic story too ! Yes, Rockstar does know where they get their inspiration from.

Max Payne 3

Still a Rockstar game on this list, because when it comes to stylish shootouts there is no game better than Max Payne 3. In RDR 2 dual wielding is back! In addition, it is a kind of intermediate game, which in this area very clearly shows an evolution from RDR to GTA V. But much more than in GTA V, Max Payne 3 is all about the details in animations and physics of the shooting action. Details we will definitely see back RDR 2! For example, take a look at 4:05 of the first gameplay trailer and compare that to what Max does in the video below at 1:57, with a shotgun in his left hand, and firing a gun in his right. Yep!

Yeah, did I ever say you can’t play physical games to get in the mood for Red Dead Redemption 2? Why not just practice in the most popular saloon game of all! And if that in itself is not Western enough for you, you can always dress up as a cowboy. And afterwards maybe throw some horseshoes, or do some line dancing! Here, the most lame stock photo I could find to illustrate this. Please!

In short, plenty to do until October 26! What are you playing in the run-up to Red Dead Redemption 2? Let us know in the comments and see you next time at the series!
