He resurrected Ninja Gaiden and created Dead or Alive. Now he is back with a new studio

Tomonobu Itagaki – father Dead or Alive series – boasted on Facebook a newly founded studio: Itagaki Games. He disclosed the information in a not very solemn way: by posting an unpublished fragment of an article by Bloomberg, mainly concerning the developer’s cooperation with Microsoft.

The declaration clearly surprised the interviewing journalist. No wonder that, in the context of the conversation, he considered it appropriate to ask the Japanese developer if he would agree to Microsoft’s adoption of Itagaki Games. Tomonobu Itagaki stated without hesitation that he would be honored if his new team could become part of Xbox Game Studios.

After four years, Dead or Alive’s father returns to creating games.

Tomonobu Itagaki is certainly not a creator associated with contemporary productions. This industry veteran started his career in the 1990s, joining Tecmo in 1992. In 1996, the first installment of the Dead or Alive series was released under his leadership, which – for various reasons – gained considerable publicity and is still popular today (although the last edition took its toll on players). In 2004, the Japanese was responsible for reviving the Ninja Gaiden series.

Four years later, he left Tecmo due to the allegedly unpaid bonuses by the publisher, and in 2010 he founded the Valhalla Games studio. However, after the much delayed premiere and the failure of the debut title, Itagaki gave up game development and focused on educating young developers. Now he apparently decided it was time for another attempt. What is his new team preparing for us? We will see for ourselves in the – hopefully – near future.
