[HOT] : What to do when Subnautica crashes on startup?

Subnautica is quite a demanding game that not all computers can run. It is quite different when the characteristics of the computer allow you to start the game and the game constantly “stands out”. Very often after starting Subnautica on the PC, the initial loading screen appears and everything stops. Once the screen with the game version appears, it hangs on the desktop.

The traditional solution – updating the driver does not work in this case, because the drives have the current version of Windows and drivers. An interesting feature of the problem is that if you start “Task Manager” while launching Subnautica, only a huge load on the video card is displayed. As if the rest of the system resources (processor, RAM and disk) were not involved at all. After closing the game window, you need to manually stop the process, otherwise the video memory will be extracted.

What could be the reason?

Possible sources of the problem:

  • An excessively large number of saves in the game. This consumes a large amount of RAM and disk space.
  • Not enough free RAM. It might be a computer that meets the minimum requirements, but it performs many tasks. If the lack of RAM memory is due to the work of other applications, simply close them. There is another option – increase the size of the paging file. When the RAM memory is exhausted, the system starts to use the hard disk memory. The only downside to the method is that the hard drive memory is much slower than the RAM. During a heavy load on the system, the game may freeze, but it will not jump to the initial screen.

How to solve the problem?

Based on user feedback and customer service responses, we have discovered several effective ways to remedy the failure.

Roll back the video pilot

We know that a bug appears more often among owners of Radeon video cards. The reason is a bug that appeared in driver version 18.5.1. The next beta has not been patched either, so it’s best to roll back the video driver to the previous stable version. Usually the game starts to work normally with the driver 18.4.1. The necessary video driver can be found on the official website of the manufacturer, but it is better to simply undo the changes.

How to restore NVidia and Radeon graphics cards:

  • Make RMB through the “Start” button, in the list that appears, select “Device Manager”.
  • In the “Video Cards” section, double-click the primary graphics card.
  • On the “Driver” tab, click the “Restore Driver” button.
  • Indicate the reason for the restoration and start the procedure with the “Yes” button.
  • If the video driver is not suitable, you need to manually download the previous stable version and install it on the system.

Turn off the integrated graphics card

On gaming laptops, 2 video cards are always installed: integrated and discrete. The first is used to perform simple tasks. The performance does not differ from each other, but the battery consumption is much more economical.

The discrete card is designed for games, graphics editors, and other applications that require a lot of system resources. In order for Subnautica to work properly, you need to manually tell the system that you must use a discrete card to run this game.

    How to set up:

  • Click RMB on the desktop and select “NVidia Control Panel” or similar software for Radeon.
  • Go to the “Manage 3D Settings” section.
  • Click on the “Software Settings” tab.
  • In the first paragraph, you must specify the application for which the settings are changed.
  • In the second step, “Choose your preferred graphics processor…”, you need to install a separate video card.
  • Apply the changes, restart the computer.
  • Extension of the swap file

This method will help avoid critical games during peak hours, but delays can appear instead. It is better to install an additional RAM card. It also happens that the game simply checks the amount of available memory and blocks its further work. The artificial increase in memory helps to eliminate gambling problems completely.

    Algorithm of actions:

  • Right-click on “This Computer” (the shortcut is on the desktop or in the “Start” menu) and select “Properties”.
  • Click on the “Advanced system settings” item.
  • In the “Performance” column, click on the “Settings” button.
  • Go to the “Advanced” tab and click “Edit” in the “Virtual Memory” section.
  • Deselect “Automatically select volume…” and set the option “Specify size”.
  • Set the amount in megabytes equal to or greater than the amount of RAM installed.
  • Clear unnecessary backups

If the problem is due to the accumulation of backups, they can be deleted very easily.

    Step by step instructions:

  • Open the game folder and follow the path Subnautica SNAppData SavedGames .
  • Each backup is located in a separate directory. It only remains to select the unnecessary backup and press the Delete key on the keyboard.
  • All of the above should be enough for Subnautica to work properly. It usually happens.
