How to customize folder and application icons on our Mac
The operating system that lives on our Mac gives us several customization options. One of them is change icons of folders or applications of our Mac with pictures, something that can help us recognize at a glance which folder we are looking for among several or customize the appearance of the computer.
How to customize icons
The first thing we need to do is locate the image we want to use for our file or application. Here are the steps:
- We open the image we want to use as an icon for our folder in the app Overview.
- We press Command (⌘) + A to select the entire image.
- We press Command (⌘) + C to copy the image.
- We close Overview.
- We select the folder or the application in which we want to change the icon.
- We press Command (⌘) + i to get information from it.
- At the top, we click on the blue image of the folder, in doing so, it acquires a bluish glow.
- Press Command (⌘) + V to paste the image we copied. If it is an application, we may need to enter the computer password.
- We close the information window.
And it’s that easy. The folder or app icon will instantly change and display the image we have chosen.
How to remove the custom icon
Later if we want exit the folder or application again With its default icon, the steps are as follows:
- We select the folder or application in which we want to delete the custom icon.
- We press Command (⌘) + i to get information from it.
- At the top we click on the image of the current icon, which gives it a bluish glow.
- We press the Delete (←) key. If it is an application, we may need to enter the computer password.
- We close the information window.

Although after this tutorial we can customize the icon of folders, applications and files, in general we recommend you to try to respect the consistency of the system. If we end up with a Pages document with a folder icon and vice versa, it will be very difficult to recognize them. For this reason, we have only exposed the icon change to folders and applications.
