The Surface Laptop Go 2 is Microsoft’s MacBook Air. But not today’s MacBook Air. It’s like the Air we had a few years ago that mid-range buyers could afford.

Here’s a laptop you can imagine in the hands of students and those who don’t consider technology a hobby. The Surface Laptop Go 2 offers fantastic portability, enough shine to make it look like an expensive style laptop, with a starting price of £529 instead of, well, a lot more.

The fancy version of this laptop is the Surface Laptop 4, which starts at £1,269 with the same CPU class as featured here.

A Surface Laptop Go 2 will make sense to many buyers, and the version Microsoft sent us is powerful enough for an everyday experience without any compromises. The only catch: this version costs £729, much more than the starting price of £529.

As always, Microsoft updates don’t come cheap. And, unfortunately, it’s exactly the version we recommend for anyone who needs to handle a lot of data and do more than basic Office tasks.

There are plenty of compelling competitors from Asus, Acer, Lenovo, and HP at this price, and some are better value for money than the Surface Laptop Go 2. However, you can’t argue with Surface’s design charm and the fact that it has a brighter screen than most laptops at this level.

Design

Microsoft mainly manufactures high-end laptops. When a cheaper model like the Surface Laptop Go 2 comes out, the first question that arises is: where are the cuts?

At first glance, they are not obvious. The Surface Laptop Go 2 has a nice keyboard and an anodized aluminum cover. Microsoft generally favors magnesium, but aluminum gives our fingers a more metallic feel.
