Minecraft is already the best-selling game in history
The other day we were talking about Minecraft Earth, a new augmented reality game for smartphones that will have beta in summer, but the celebrations of the 10th anniversary of Minecraft do not stop: Mojang has confirmed that 176 million copies have already been sold and that it has been become the best-selling game ever.
In a post published on Microsoft’s official website, Minecraft creative director Saxs Persson has announced that the game has not only been sold in practically every country in the world and on almost every platform, but also that it already has 176 million copies since its release in November 2011.
Although the data must be qualified, because it is true that there is no general consensus on how many copies its main rival, Tetris, has sold throughout history. Estimates vary widely depending on who says them and the versions that are taken into account (from 170 million to 425 million, via PC Gamer), but despite that, there is no doubt that having sold 20 million more copies in Just seven months, Minecraft is still a mass phenomenon.
Grand Theft Auto V is the only other game that comes close, as it has currently sold 110 million copies. So far no other game has passed the 100 million mark.
Also remember that to celebrate the tenth anniversary of the game, the original Minecraft, the one from 2009, can be played for free from the browser.
