Users on internet forum NeoGAF have discovered a patent pending by Nintendo for a new console.

A striking feature of the patent is the lack of a disc drive. “The device does not come with an optical disc drive that reads programs and / or data from an optical disc,” said the patent description.

“A device contains an internal hard drive on which programs and / or data can be stored, a communication unit that sends or retrieves data via a network and a processor that is able to load a program from the hard drive.” This gives the impression that games for the console are only offered for download.

The description also states that the controller of the new console has a ‘display unit’, just like the Wii U GamePad.

Nintendo has not yet responded to the patent so far. It is therefore not clear whether this is a prototype of the previously announced NX.
