The members of Nintendo Switch Online having subscribed to the most complete formula will be able to try out three games Mega Drive additional. As of today, the service offers Alien Soldier, Light Crusader and Super Fantasy Zone.

Last October, Nintendo took the risk of modifying the online service of its Switch. Nothing really changed for Nintendo Switch Online subscribers, but it was however enriched by an “Additional Pack” bringing together exclusive content for Animal Crossing: New Horizons and a handful of N64 and Mega Drive titles. Subsequently, it was announced that the members of this formula would be able to practice, and at no additional cost, the new circuits of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.

Regarding the Mega Drive offer, it was ultimately modeled on what was already in effect for the NES and the Super Nintendo, namely a catalog of titles accessible during the subscription period and which was going to be increasingly filled with the weather. Users also had the option of playing certain titles online.

The Switch welcomes Alien Soldier, Light Crusader and Super Fantasy Zone in its Online Additional Pack

When the Mega Drive appeared in the Nintendo Switch Online add-on pack, here are the titles, fourteen in total, that were offered (and still are):

  • Golden Ax
  • Strider
  • Musha
  • ShiningForce
  • Sonic The Hedgehog 2
  • Dr. Robotnik’s Mean Bean Machine
  • Streets of Rage 2
  • Shinobi III: Return of the Ninja Master
  • Ecco The Dolphin
  • Gunstar Heroes
  • Phantasy Star IV
  • Castlevania: The Next Generation
  • Contra Hard Corps
  • Ristar

Last December, an update added five titles to the list:

  • Thunder Force II
  • Toe Jam & Earl
  • Sword of Vermilion
  • Headdy Dynamite
  • Altered Beast

And it is therefore on this Thursday, March 17, 2022 that three new games make their appearance in this offer:

  • Super Fantasy Zone
  • Light Crusader
  • Alien Soldier

Once again, the (very) solid rubs shoulders with the most dispensable. Note that Super Fantasy Zone and Light Crusader, like others before them, are included in the MegaDrive Mini. Alien Soldier can notably be purchased for 0.99 euros on Steam, as can Light Crusader by the way.

Nintendo Switch: the legendary SEGA Mega Drive invites itself with three new old-school games

THE MEGA DRIVE IN THE SPOTLIGHT

Slowly but surely, Nintendo Switch Online continues to grow. We remind you that this is none other than the internet service of the Big N console: for 19.99 euros per year, you then have access to online gaming, but also to a whole list of Nintendo and Super Nintendo games which has grown over the years.

For some time, an “Additional Pack” is offered. This costs an additional 19.99 euros per year and allows you to play several titles from the Nintendo 64 catalog., including Super Mario 64, F-Zero X, Banjo-Kazooie and The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time and Majora’s Mask. Bonus, a partnership with SEGA has been established, providing a selection of Mega Drive games for all subscribers concerned. As for the Nintendo 64, this list grows over the months… hence the three new games, freshly unveiled.

RUN & GUN, RPG AND SHOOT THEM UP ON THE PROGRAM

So, what’s new in March 2022? Three games released at the time on SEGA Mega Drive, but not necessarily the most popular. In the first place, so we have Alien Soldier, a run & gun released in 1995 and quite clearly inspired by the Metroid formula. A game known to be long and damn difficult: fortunately, we can use the quick save to overcome more easily this muscular adventure.

Secondly, Light Crusader, a role-playing game also dating from 1995. It embodies the knight David, charged by King Frederick to discover the origin of the curse launched on Green Rod. It is an RPG in isometric view where the complex exploration of dungeons and the fight of fierce monsters are the main leitmotifs.

At last, we have Super Fantasy Zone, released back then in 1993. It’s neither more nor less than a shoot ’em up with epileptic tendencies and the last of the Fantasy Zone series: you control a ship in 2D levels, abused by dozens of opponents and their cannon fire.

Nintendo Switch Online adds more Mega Drive classics: Alien Soldier and more

New retro games are coming to the Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack subscription. After the incorporation of The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask into the Nintendo 64 catalog, it is now the turn of the Mega Drive. Service members can now enjoy three more 16-bit SEGA classics, none other than Alien Soldier, Light Crusader, and Super Fantasy Zone.

The Nintendo 64’s presence on Nintendo Switch Online had been rumored for some time before it was officially announced. However, the arrival of Mega Drive was a bit of a surprise. Among the titles available are Sonic The Hedgehog 2, Gunstar Heroes or Streets of Rage 2. On the other hand, games as well known as the first opus of Sonic have not yet been released.

Three Sega Genesis games have been added to the Nintendo Switch Online expansion

THREE NEW SEGA TITLES JOIN NINTENDO SWITCH ONLINE EXPANSION OFFER

We start with a difficult Run and Gun. Alien Soldier was developed by Treasure Co. Ltd and published by Sega on Mega Drive in 1995. You go through fairly short levels to be able to face tough bosses. You control the character of Epsilon Eagle, a sort of falcon-headed cybernetic mutant who can jump, shoot, dash and walk on the ceiling. But that’s not all, it has different firing modes, each with a different power and effect, and consuming more or less energy, so handle with skill. A sort of berserk mode is also activated when your life bar is at its maximum, allowing you to perform a deadly dash, usable only once because your character itself suffers damage during this action

We continue with Light Crusader: The Mystery of Green Rod, still developed by Treasure Co. Ltd and published by Sega, released in 1995 on Mega Drive, an isometric 3D role-playing game where you lead the knight David launched on a quest before him allow to understand the origin of a curse launched on Green Rod and of course to put an end to it. Exploration of a huge labyrinthine mausoleum on several levels, you will have to face many creatures in order to save the inhabitants kidnapped and offered as sacrifices to the demon. Different platforming sequences solve puzzles, requiring you to move barrels and cannonballs over trap doors and elevators.
