[REVIEW] : GPU prices fall again – this AMD graphics card is now 35% cheaper than when it was released
We are seeing more and more evidence that GPU prices are slowly normalizing. That of a specific graphics card even falls below the recommended retail price.
This is one of AMD’s most affordable models, the RX 6500 XT, which is seeing its launch cost drop by 35% in Germany – as reported by Tom’s Hardware.
At the large German retailer Mindfactory, the PowerColor edition of the 6500 XT (ITX Gaming, single-fan version) can be obtained for 169 €. That is €40 less than its standard price on the European market. Three weeks ago, some RX 6500 XT models were spotted at €199, again at Mindfactory. It is clear that this new decline represents an important and welcome development.
Note that all GPUs reviewed are always higher than their recommended prices, the price of the Nvidia RTX 3080 Ti – for example – capping at 19% above the recommended retail price. Most other Nvidia RTX 3000 models are still substantially inflated: the RTX 3090 shows a 35% markup, compared to 42% for the RTX 3070 Ti – also at Newegg.
For AMD, the average price level above the recommended retail price turns out to be a little more acceptable. Beyond the RX 6500 XT mentioned above, the RX 6600, another entry-level model, is 21% more expensive, and the RX 6700 XT has a 25% premium. The flagship model RX 6900 XT suffers a level of inflation of 30%, it is 32% for the RX 6600 XT.
The small AMD RADEON RX 6500 XT graphics card is displayed at only 169 euros in Germany
In Germany, the RX 6500 XT seems not to have the same prices as in France. Even though the card is available at a minimum of 236.90 euros, we have already seen models at 209 euros with our neighbours. And this day, rebelote, at mindfactorywith a new record fare applied to the card which was available at only 169 euros with 86 units available at this price in Power Color ITX. There was also the Power Color Figther model at 179 euros, with a more advanced cooling system.

A reference that is definitely struggling to find a buyer, even in times of crisis…
The case of the Radeon RX 6500 XT graphics card, launched on January 20, testifies to one thing: despite a tense GPU market for more than a year, customers were not willing to buy anything. Apart from the very first hours after its launch, this graphics card was one of the few that was regularly available at retailers in February / March. Nevertheless, the prices charged were, and still remain, much higher than that recommended by AMD (210 euros). In France, on Amazon, some models are offered at 245 euros. At a specialist retailer like TopAchat, the prices are more between 250 and 300 euros. On the other hand, in Germany, and more specifically at Mindfactory, some RX 6500 XTs were sold at prices lower than the MSRP. The retailer, for example, listed a PowerColor card at 169 euros including tax. Note that across the Rhine, the VAT is 19%.
Prices still high in France
Unfortunately, on the French market, if prices have been falling for several weeks, they remain generally higher than those practiced in Germany. Instead, count at least 440 euros for a GeForce RTX 3050. The Radeon RX 6600s generally trade between 420 and 500 euros. Incidentally, note that TopAchat is offering a flash sale at 399 euros on the PowerColor Radeon RX 6600 HellHound + Xbox Game Pass 1 month offered for another 66 hours.
To come back to the Radeon RX 6500 XT, even at its recommended retail price, it remains difficult to recommend. In terms of pure performance, it does less well than an RX 5500 XT 8 GB. Its only advantage is slightly lower power consumption.
AMD Radeon RX 6500 XT is now 35% below MSRP in Germany
What just happened? In a scenario few of us have expected to see for a very long time, a modern graphics card sells for significantly less than the manufacturer’s suggested retail price (MSRP). There are some caveats – it’s the much-maligned Radeon RX 6500 XT, and it sells out in Germany – but the fact that it’s 35% below MSRP is yet another recent sign that the prolonged GPU crisis could finally start to fade.
As spotted by Tom’s Hardware, German retail giant Mindfactory is offering a PowerColor AMD Radeon RX 6500 XT for €169 including VAT (at the time of writing), 35% less than its usual MSRP of €229. This new price converts directly to $189, and once the 19% German sales tax is removed, the figure drops to $159. There’s also a dual-fan Fighter model for ten euros more.
A quick look on Newegg shows two AMD Radeon 6500 XT cards for sale: a $253 XFX model and a $224 Asrock card, both above the $200 MSRP. If Mindfactory’s discount was applied to the US MSRP, the RDNA 2 product would sell for around $130.
Mindfactory actually started selling the Radeon RX 6500 XT below MSRP over three weeks ago, but it has since lowered the previous price from €199 to €169.
While the Germany GPU market may reflect current or upcoming trends, the big caveat here relates to the card in question. We hated the Radeon RX 6500 XT – our own Steve Walton called it the worst GPU version he could remember. Its PCIe x4 limitation, 4GB of VRAM, and lack of hardware encoding helped it achieve an abysmal score of just 20, which explains why it’s alone under MSRP.
