[REVIEW] : “Let them ignore the context”

Christian Lopez is the current sports director of Cannet-Rocheville. The former international defender (39 caps), finalist in the 1976 European Cup of Champions Clubs with AS Saint-Étienne, is happy that his players can “live a fantastic experience at the Vélodrome” on Sunday against OM.

The Marseillaise : What is the atmosphere in your group since you know that you will play OM at the Vélodrome? ?

Christian Lopez: First there was absolute joy at the time of the draw. Then there was the prospect of playing this round of the Coupe de France at the Vélodrome, in a mythical stadium. For the players, for the leaders, it’s a double honor. It is the whole of the Cannet-Rocheville family that is preparing to experience exceptional moments.

What led you to come to receive » OM at the Velodrome ?

CL: From the draw, we knew that hosting OM in the Alpes-Maritimes would be complicated. In our stadium, it was impossible. There was the Cannes solution, where the municipality agreed, or even Nice. But the prefecture refused. In Monaco, it was not possible. We therefore asked the FFF which, in consultation with OM, accepted that the match be played in Marseille.

How are your players preparing ?

CL: I had a little fear after our qualification against Bastia-Borgo. But they were able to negotiate the two league matches that followed. For Sunday, everyone should be operational. And all of them are in optimal shape.

On what bases is your group built? ?

CL: Already, we have no former professional in the team. We have a few elements that have passed through training centers in the region, in particular Cannes. But the main part is made up of young people from the club.

Do you have any advice for them? ?

CL: I will appeal to their qualities. Then, they will have to disregard the context, that they avoid overplaying by having confidence in their qualities. I’m also going to ask them to have fun, to think about doing what they know how to do with a ball. That they have fun and live a fantastic experience at the Velodrome. That they don’t feel overwhelmed by the context and the issue. Then it will happen what will happen.

Do you fear OM ?

CL: Everything will depend on how Jorge Sampaoli will approach this match. I know that OM remain on a very poor result in the Coupe de France, already facing an N3. I think there will be an urge to erase that. And then, it’s been a long time since the Vélodrome has had a French Cup match. I think that will count.

What memories do you have of the Velodrome ?

CL: I’ve never played a Coupe de France match there. This will be a first for me too. But I remember fantastic atmospheres when I came with Saint-Étienne in the league.
