Booty himself has already hinted that Triple A’s development isn’t as sustainable as it used to be, and that some next-gen features are contributing to the delays in some of the games the division has in the works. Keep this in mind, as it may give you a better understanding of what lies ahead.
Unreal Engine 5 gives Xbox Game Studios everything it needs
And that’s because, in the words of the executive, Microsoft’s studios are constantly meeting. These meetings are called “summits” and are used to find common ground. One of these points cited is the use of the Unreal Engine; probably the latest version. So it looks like at least the use of this engine is on the table.
It makes sense, developing or working for proprietary engines always gives better results, but it lengthens developments and increases the resources required. It is possible that using a consolidated solution can speed up turnaround times.
WE HAVE A STRUCTURE FOR THIS, WHICH WE SIMPLY CALL SUMMITS, WHERE WE GATHER SUBJECT EXPERTS FOR ONE OR TWO DAYS. WE HAD SUMMIT ON ANIMATION, UI, UNREAL ENGINE, PHYSICS, ETC. I THINK WE DID ABOUT 25 LAST YEAR. THIS IS OUR MAIN MECHANISM FOR TEAMS TO SHARE TECHNOLOGY BOTH WAYS.
State of Decay 3 developed with Unreal Engine 5 – Gears of War devs lend a hand
The info on State of Decay 3 are about as rare as a pleasant day during a zombie apocalypse, but Xbox Game Studios head Matt Booty has just revealed that the next game is being made on Unreal Engine 5 with help from the developer of Gears of War, The Coalition.
“You mentioned Undead Labs, they’re working with The Coalition in Vancouver, our Gears of War studio, using some of the technology from Unreal Engine 5 and some of the things that were in Gears of War before we brought it into State of Decay 3,” Booty told Nelson.
“Before last week, we spent a whole day at Undead Labs in Seattle, it was awesome, getting an update on State of Decay 3, which has some really cool stuff, in addition to the fact that State of Decay 2 continues grow its user base,” Booty added. “It’s kind of the stealth genre that keeps growing, and it was cool to have some new info. I think we’re at eleven million loyal players on State of Decay 2 now, which is pretty cool. All of this, what they’re doing there, is really a laboratory, a proving ground, for everything that’s coming up for State of Decay 3.”
Matt Booty also talks about how he and the team manage tweaks with studios on the progress of their games and how those studios share technology back and forth, which takes place with multiple “meet-and-greets”.
“We have a structure in place, we just call them meetups, where we bring subject matter experts together for a day or two,” says Booty. “We had animation meetups, UI meetups, Unreal Engine meetups, physics meetups, and so on. I think we had close to 25 last year. This is our primary mechanism for teams to share technology. »
The Coalition is one of Microsoft’s frontline studios for Unreal Engine 5, having announced in 2021 that it was moving to UE5 for “several new projects”. In April 2022, The Coalition even presented its own experiences under Unreal Engine 5.
As for State of Decay 3, it was announced during an Xbox games showcase in 2020 and we only got a quick cinematic glimpse of a lonely woman in the desert and a dead wolf eaten by a zombie deer.
State of Decay 3 goes under Unreal Engine 5 and receives help from The Coalition (Gears of War)
State of Decay 3, the third in this series of open-world zombie survival games, was announced in 2020 during an Xbox showcase. But since then, no information or release date. And for good reason, the development of the game is bogged down in the same shortcomings that we have heard in other studios in recent years. But we now know more about the state of development and what’s next.
Undead Labs needs help
The team ofUndeads Labs suffered a lot of managerial problems, as well as problems of discrimination and sexism within the company. These internal concerns would have frozen the development of the game in its pre-production phase, and they would have initially arisen following the takeover of Undead Labs by Microsoft, which was completely unaware of it. Since the release of this case, we do not really know what is happening with the development.
Xbox Game Studios Director Matt Bootygave some information about the progress of the State of Decay 3 project during a podcast :
“You mentioned Undead Labs, they’re working with The Coalition in Vancouver, our Gears of War studio, using some of the tech from Unreal Engine 5 and some of the things that were in Gears of War before we put it in to State of Decay 3 »
We now know that the game is receiving help from The Coalition, the studio also bought by Microsoft behind Gears of War. The other information to remember, is that State of Decay 3 is now being developed on the Unreal Engine 5. We can therefore only hope that the help of The Coalition will allow State of Decay 3 to see the light of day in the best conditions.
Specialized in the Unreal Engine 5, The Coalition comes as reinforcement on State of Decay 3
We knew from the very beginning of the year that State of Decay 3 was developed under Unreal Engine 5 and in order to reassure us about the rendering of this third episode which takes its time, learn from Major Nelson that part of The Coalition staff came to lend a hand for everything related to the operation of this engine. A good thing since this team is still the best placed in this area among Xbox Game Studios.
Whatever the result, it comes back to recent remarks by Matt Booty who indicated that the contribution of Crystal Dynamics to the shipyard Perfect Dark Shouldn’t come as a surprise given that, in his view, the days of seeing a studio work alone on a current AAA are over, hence the partnerships often made between Microsoft and Certain Affinity, Iron Galaxy, Blackbird Interactive and others.
As for State of Decay 3after a difficult start due to too much freedom left by the publisher (but fortunately doubled staff), the project should now be back on track.
