Paris-New York flights in just 30 minutes aboard a rocket, anyone? This is SpaceX’s plan for 2027.
Invited to the microphone of RTL, Gwynne Shotwell, the president of SpaceX, spoke about the vast ambitions of the company founded by Elon Musk. The latter stated bluntly that it will be possible to take off from France and arrive in New York in less than an hour in five years.
“It’s definitely a possibility for our Starship rocket. At the moment, we are focusing on the Moon, on Mars but also on flights from one point to another on the Earth,” she said. Indeed, the rocket should be able to connect these two cities in about thirty minutes. The president also mentioned other routes, namely Los Angeles-Shanghai in 36 minutes or Sydney-Zurich in 50 minutes.
FLIGHT RATES HAVE NOT BEEN RELEASED YET
To achieve these feats, the rocket would have to take off from offshore platforms first, because taking off from a place like an airport would be too dangerous. SpaceX does not plan to carry out takeoffs and landings on the firm term until its technology is fully developed.
The rocket will be able to carry a hundred passengers during intercontinental flights. As for pricing, Gwynne Shotwell didn’t provide any information on that. On the other hand, she said the company will ensure the comfort of its customers. “We do everything to make these flights as smooth as possible,” she said.
To arrive at its destination so quickly, the rocket will be launched at more than 27,000 kilometers per hour. According to the American media, the American army would consider using these ultra-fast intercontinental flights to carry out missions. What do you think ?
SpaceX President Gwynne Shotwell said that within five years, it would be possible to make a Paris-New York in 30 minutes aboard the Starship rocket.
“It’s definitely a possibility for our Starship rocket. For the moment, we are concentrating on the Moon, Mars but also on flights from one point to another on the Earth, ”said the leader at the microphone of RTL.
With a speed of 27,000 km/h, this rocket could, for example, make it possible to travel from Sydney (Australia) to Zurich (Switzerland) in 50 minutes or from Los Angeles (United States) to Shanghai (China) in just 36 minutes. .
On the other hand, flights would not be made from one airport to another as is the case for airplanes.
At first, the rockets should take off from platforms located at sea.
“Once this technology becomes mature, we will be able to calmly consider firing and landing pads on dry land,” said the president of SpaceX.
In total, a hundred passengers could board a Starship rocket for these intercontinental flights.
No price indication has yet been disclosed.
Finally, on the subject of comfort, “we do everything to make these flights as smooth as possible,” said Gwynne Shotwell.
