The creator of WoW leaves Blizzard after 13 years
One of the creators of World of Warcraft and a longtime employee of Blizzard Entertainment – Chris Kaleiki – decided to leave the studio after thirteen years of work. The developer talked about his decision in a video posted on the YouTube platform. In the material, he reveals that he is not satisfied with what WoW looks like now.
One of the reasons for Chris Kaleiki’s dissatisfaction is that the iconic MMO has ceased to emphasize guilds and encourage players to organize into efficient communities. In his opinion, this approach, while it may suit players who prefer to play alone, is contrary to the basic idea of the genre.
For some time now, probably too long, I’ve just been dissatisfied with the state of the game. I think in Classic, the guild is a big thing. To do anything in the endgame you really need to be in a guild. In this way a dependency is created between the players as they need each other to be successful. And although it may seem very restrictive at times, it ultimately creates cohesion, creates a community … – said the developer.
Instead of complicated team content and emphasis on the social aspect of the game, WoW now focuses on the story, which is more in line with traditional, single-player RPG production.
Warcraft and WoW have always had a story, but I think recently, with the modern version of the game, that story is becoming an increasingly part of it. The characters and all their dramas really take the air of this production. I, on the other hand, think that in the virtual world, in an MMO, the players are in fact the center of the story, said Chris Kaleiki.
The developer emphasizes that there is nothing wrong with the game idea, which is currently being implemented in World of Warcraft, and many players like this approach. For himself, however, it was a turn in the wrong direction. The developer has been aware of this for some time, but the premiere of World of Warcraft Classic strengthened his conviction.
This is not so much a problem with the game, but a certain feeling of dispersion between what the modern game is and what it used to be – said the developer.
Chris Kaleiki in the past worked, among others over PvP content World of Warcraft, class projects (e.g. Monk) or locations (Ashran). In this game, you can find two characters and an item that refer to this developer with their names – this is a great proof that his work was important and appreciated for the company.
