The next M1-based Macs will be the 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pros, the 24-inch iMac, and a smaller Mac Pro, according to various rumors.
After the keynote last Tuesday we have among us new Macs with Apple Silicon. A few Macs that, with the little we know about them and some benchmark that is appearing, are leaving us amazed and wanting much more. Let’s review which M1 computers await us in the near future.
Macs with M1 for all tastes
Initially, for Tuesday’s keynote, we were thinking about the possibility of Apple introducing a version with the M1 of the 16-inch MacBook Pro. We expected it this way because of a report that Mark Gurman published in Bloomberg stating that Apple is working on the 16-inch model. This rumor is supported by analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who expect this computer to appear during the end of the second quarter of 2021, that is, between a spring event, probably in March, until WWDC21.
Since the revamp of the 15-inch MacBook Pro, which made it the 16-inch model, We all assumed that at some point the model 13 would go through a similar process. Kuo also predicted this launch and placed it, like the Mac before it, in late Q2 or early Q3 2020.
And now, the iMac. We also expect certain size changes and a complete redesign for the iMac range. Ming-Chi Kuo predicted, several months ago, that Apple was going to launch a 24-inch iMac in late 2020 or early 2021. We can rule out the first option, so in a supposed event for March next year we could see these computers appear.
Finally Mark Gurman told us about the development of a Mac Pro that in size would be half the current one. The information available does not include a release date, so we can expect it from March onwards.
So if we summarize the situation and we order the different computers from most to least likely the list is as follows:
- 16-inch MacBook Pro: March or WWDC.
- 24-inch iMac: March.
- 14-inch MacBook Pro: March or WWDC.
- Small Mac Pro: WWDC or November.
Keep in mind that the dates are approximate and based on the rumors that we currently have, but they give us a general idea of the path that new computers can take. I want to point out that, Personally, the launch of a 14-inch MacBook Pro, taking into account that its predecessor has just been presented, would place it more in September or October than in March.
This is how the new Mac mini with Apple Silicon remains compared to the previous model with Intel
On the other hand, comment that with the impressive power that even the MacBook Air with M1 show, a computer that comes without fans, we can understand that Apple needs a little more time to iterate the M1 in something like an M1X or even an M2 to include it in the most powerful Macs. A 16-inch MacBook Pro with the power of a 13-inch would make little sense, so we will see how not only the launch line evolves but also Apple Silicon itself.
