THQ Nordic acquires the Piranha Bytes studio

THQ Nordic has acquired Piranha Bytes, the studio responsible for the Gothic, Risen and Elex series, and with it the rights to these intellectual properties.

Both companies have already collaborated on occasion, as THQ Nordic published the post-apocalyptic RPG Elex in 2017. On a hypothetical second part, in the press release of the acquisition you can read “semi-official comment: guess what.”

On the new Gothic, or a supposed Gothic 5, they have “nothing to comment on at the moment”.

Remember that Piranha Bytes did not take care of Gothic 4, by the way. At the time JoWooD did the distribution task, and Spellbound Entertainment took the reins of development. After that JoWooD became insolvent, and Piranha acquired the rights to the IP again.

The purchase will not change Piranha Bytes. The studio will continue to be based in Essen, Germany, and the entire team will maintain their position to develop RPGs “and have total creative freedom to do so,” according to THQ Nordic.

“There are moments in life when you think, ‘this feels good,’” said Björn Pankratz, project manager and designer at Piranha Bytes. “Well, this is one of those moments.”

“We’ve been working on great and exciting things over the past two years, and we’re very excited about what the future can bring with the right partner and the right network of companies.”
