TikTok Music: the ultimate rival of Spotify and Apple Music is revealed

TikTok Music, a hypothetical new music streaming service, unveils a trademark filing in the United States. By surfing on the growing popularity of TikTok, ByteDance seems to want to nibble the market shares of Spotify and Apple Music, the two leaders in the sector.

According to the filing, visible in the organization’s database, the TikTok Music app should allow “to buy, play, share, download music, songs, albums, lyrics”. Note that the mark was also registered in Australia last November.

Between streaming service and social network

According to this description, TikTok Music advertises itself as a competitor music streaming service to Spotify, Apple Music and others. But, according to the filing, ByteDance won’t be content to just mirror the competition’s offering. To get out of the game, the Chinese group would offer options close to those of a social network.

Indeed, TikTok Music would allow its users to “stream live audio and video”. On that side, the application, which would be both accessible on smartphone and computer, would approach the social network TikTok. It would also be possible “to edit and upload photos as a cover of playlists” and “comment on music, songs and albums”.

On this point, the service promises to be more interactive than the players already established on the market. We also imagine that TikTok Music would be elsewhere tightly integrated to the main application. This way, ByteDance could relay TikTok’s 1.2 billion users to its new service.

An evolution of Resso?

Josh Gerben, trademark lawyer, believes that “ByteDance only files trademark applications for products that it is seriously considering.” These deposits probably augur the arrival of a new music streaming service in the arena.

This isn’t ByteDance’s first foray into the music business. In 2020, the Chinese firm has already launched Resourcea classical music streaming app, in Brazil, India and Indonesia.

In the filing, ByteDance mentions the presence of advertisements. De facto, it is possible that TikTok Music offers a free offer, with advertisements, like Spotify. To get rid of the ads, you would obviously have to subscribe to a paid subscription.

This is also the economic model chosen by Resso. For the time being, it is not known whether TikTok Music is designed as an alternative to Resso or as an evolution of it. Be that as it may, the arrival of TikTok risks reshuffling the cards in the music streaming market.

TikTok could soon offer a music streaming service

The service would allow users to buy, play, share and download music. But it’s not that. It would also be possible to edit, share and recommend playlists, comment on music, broadcast live audio and video files or even edit and upload photographs as covers for playlists.

Logically, it is quite possible that TikTok Music will integrate with the main TikTok app. This will allow ByteDance to convert its 1.2 billion user base on TikTok into new users for its streaming app.

A new major competitor

Note that ByteDance already operates Resso, a music streaming application in India, Brazil and Indonesia. Resso’s monthly active users had increased by 304% between January 2021 and January 2022. And that was in India alone. By way of comparison, during the same period, Spotify recorded a growth of 38%.

This new music streaming application, if it saw the light of day one day, would therefore represent a new major competitor for the current giants of the sector. For example, on Apple Music and Spotify, it is not possible to comment on music. A feature that ByteDance plans to integrate into its new service.

An experienced company

Music streaming is an area that ByteDance already knows. In 2020, they launched a music streaming app named Resso, in India, Brazil, and Indonesia. Resso has some of the features described in the “TikTok Music” trademark filing, such as the ability to create playlists, share songs on social media, and interact with the app’s community.

ByteDance is already using TikTok to bring app users to Resso. According to a report by The Information, the TikTok app in Brazil has a button that allows users to be redirected to Resso to listen to the full version of a song they are interested in. With this system, users stay within the ByteDance ecosystem rather than heading to Spotify or Apple Music.

It’s not yet known if ByteDance plans to develop a music streaming app based on Resso’s foundation, or if the company is planning something completely different. One thing is certain, the launch of an application of this kind could once again upset the music streaming industry.
