“The view from here is fantastic.” These words are said suddenly and unexpectedly by Nathan Drake, the hero of Uncharted 2: Among Thieves. This little phrase created a smile from ear to ear. It’s because? Because it is simply well placed, well said and seemed to come from my mind. Do you want to know the answer? Read the entire analysis and you will find out.
Incredibly, there is very little to say about Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, where in just one word you can describe this game. You can use many, but only one will arrive. I will use, too beautiful. Okay, there were two. As you may have noticed, it doesn’t seem like anything new that we are looking at one of the best games of 2009, and perhaps the best game for PlayStation 3. Of course, the game isn’t perfect, but there should be little left, if we know what it’s perfection. But there we go.
Uncharted 2: Among Thieves brings us Nathan Drake, the new accidental hero created by Naugthy Dog. The first game, called Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune, opened the door to one of the most beautiful games that have come out to date on PS3. It was a small game, with puzzles that were too easy and without any online mode, which sent longevity to new inroads in single-player mode. In a first instance, this new game does not seem to escape the formula created, but this only in a less attentive and awkward look. Uncharted 2: Among Thieves is a true sequel, and not only intended to take on the fame it won, but also reinvented itself and brought a much more solid game, with a cohesive story, with a realistic and well-structured script, peppered by everything that good has a big blockbuster. Lots of action, expulsions, tension, adrenaline, drama, romance, and a fantastic comic streak, which in our good Portuguese, we congratulate you for the fantastic location. Simply brilliant. Not making clear the role of sound design, with a fantastic soundtrack, with music placed according to the environment, and sound effects very well achieved.
The face animations are fantastic.
Dissecting all this, and for those who haven’t played the first one, or who don’t even know the series, we have a third person game, inspired by the fantastic Indiana Jones films. Let’s say it’s a mix of Indiana Jones with touches of Tomb Raider. But everything connected masterfully. Uncharted 2: Among Thieves is a real treat for our eyes, not relegating to the background the factor of surprising us at every corner. It is undoubtedly among the best that has been done to date in terms of graphics, and especially all this at an extremely stable frame-rate. Of note, the previous one already had the color palette used in the game. While other games excel in standardizing the colors of the materials and environment, U2 (always looks good) takes us to a lush environment of color and brightness. Certain scenarios are recreated in such a way that I found myself thinking many times: “What a job it must have taken to design and decorate this area and I spent 10 seconds here.” It is this concern for detail that makes U2 so special.
So we were not more than friends?
There are always certain things that captivate us in certain video games, and in U2, personally they are the animations of the characters, especially in the cut-scenes. They may not be the most real to date, but the way they interact with each other, the placement of the body, face and all the details of the hands, hips (yes hips) make each character a real and very credible person. It’s like real actors, and improving all this, the transition from cut-scenes to the game itself is done instantly, that when we realize we are already in control of the character. The production of Uncharted 2 was treated as if it were a film. Everything we know in the movies, camera angles, choice of mandatory voices and clichés in this type of theme. Everything is there. It is interesting to see the prominence that was given to Chloe Frazer, the new beautiful brunette girl, and also to the model from last year (as it is comically called) Elena. The sensuality of these two girls was explored to the maximum, leaving Nathan Drake in a very ungrateful position.
