Our smartphones are disappearing into unexpected places, whether it’s a quick dip in the toilet or a trip behind the couch where only dust bunnies roam. How strong is your device?

IP ratings are a useful yardstick for comparing the overall resistance of new smartphones to dust and water. However, keep in mind that IP rating tests are performed in the lab on new equipment. Therefore, protection can be significantly reduced if you throw away and drain your phone or buy a refurbished device.

After the first two letters of the rating, the next letter is the level of resistance to dust and external objects. This scale goes from zero to six.

The last letter of the IP rating indicates water resistance, and this scale runs from zero to nine. A seven-win smartphone can be submerged in shallow water for a short time. Devices rated eight are certified to go a few meters deeper than devices rated seven, although the increase in depth is variable. For example, although the iPhone 11 and 11 Pro are both IP68 rated, the maximum depth for the iPhone 11 is 2 meters and 4 meters for the 11 Pro. The water resistance rating of nine can be largely ignored, as it relates to resistance to high pressure hot currents, not immersion.

Using the iPhone 13 as an example, its IP68 rating means the phone is protected against dust and can be submerged in water.

If the IP rating uses an “X”, it means the device is rated for protection against water or dust, but not both. Companies choose the rating process, and it is important to understand that “X” is not a failing rating, just no rating.

How resistant is my smartphone to water and dust?

Curious about the level of water and dust resistance of your current device? Below are the IP ratings of popular smartphones.

As far as Apple devices go, the 2nd generation iPhone 7, 7 Plus, 8, 8 Plus, X, XR, and SE all received an IP67 rating. iPhone XS, XS Max and later models are IP68. In Apple’s IP68 rating choices, the older options are only rated for a maximum depth of 2 meters. You can submerge cool footage up to 6 meters.

How to check, read iPhone IP rating? Do them before you engage in extreme activities with your Apple smartphone

However, many users do not know how to read these codes and where to find them.

Since iPhones are considered to be the most advanced handsets in the market, users tend to take these devices with them on vacations.

Well, who doesn’t love capturing footage of themselves going to a beach, diving or climbing mountains?

Most of the time, the Ingress Rating contains the “IP” code, which is followed by two digits. The first character indicates the dust resistance of the device and the last digit indicates its water resistance.

But, there are cases where the IP address is followed by a letter X or has the last character as a letter X. If you see this, it is only dust or water resistant.

IEC clarified that the character X does not mean that the device has failed. It only means that the water or dust index is missing from the device.

First digits

    • 0 – No protection against contact and penetration of objects
    • 1 – Any large surface of the body, such as the back of the hand, but no protection against deliberate contact with any part of the body (50 mm and more)

    • 3 – Tools, thick wires, etc. (2.5mm and above)
    • 4 – Most wires, screws, etc. (1mm and more)
    • 5 – Protected against dust

    • 4 – Water splashes
    • 5 – Water jets
    • 6 – Powerful water jets

    • 8 – Immersion beyond 1m
