13 mythical TV series that you can watch on Netflix, HBO, Amazon and other streaming platforms.

The premiere of ‘The X Files’ in full on July 7 is just the tip of the iceberg: we have been in for a few weeks the various streaming platforms relentlessly re-release series that have made television history. It is a good time to recover classics that you missed in your day or revisit those that made you enjoy. That not everything in your diet has to be the latest of the latest.

On the other hand … what have we considered here “mythical”? We recognize that it is an extremely elastic concept, and you will find many of our proposals on this list not worthy of such a qualification. We have chosen series that are at least a few years old (enough to know if their success was a passing fad or something really deserved), that have impacted in one way or another in the television medium (that is, beyond their acceptance they have been influential) and whose quality is beyond doubt.

So ditch the contemporary whimsy. This list is overflowing with mythical series for real. And you can see them today in the wide streaming offer at your disposal.

‘Stories to not sleep’ (1966-1982)

Few series deserve the qualification of mythical within the singular history of Spanish fantastic as ‘Stories to not sleep’ by Chicho Ibáñez Serrador, a brief but very influential collection of suspense and horror stories with ‘Alfred Hitch___ presents’ as an obvious reference. Despite her meager budgets, her sensational performances (often by the unforgettable Narciso Ibáñez Menta) and her theatrical tone make her essential. There are only 29 episodes, including 4 in color shot in 1982.

‘Star Trek’ (1966-1969)

If you want to get on board the Enterprise, nothing like the original ‘Star Trek’ series. Only three seasons that in their day were not exactly an audience bombshell, but that time has settled in its rightful place as one of the most influential science fiction adventures in the medium. Everything that has made the franchise famous is here, from the conciliatory and far-reaching messages for its time to the delightful camp and gentle tone of adventure. And if you want more, you have the rest of the entire franchise on Netflix, from ‘The New Generation’ to the recent and interesting ‘Discovery’.

‘Seinfeld’ (1989-1998)

For many viewers, the best and most influential sitcom of all time, and with good reason: this series “about nothing”, as it was popularly known – although Jerry Seinfeld and Larry David, its co-creators, do not entirely agree with the phrase that they themselves coined – is at the same time tremendously daring. He broke the unwritten norms of the genre, laughed at the ridiculous story arcs of learning and redemption and it was monstrously relevant thanks to its quartet of protagonists, as close as they were extravagant.

‘The Simpsons’ (1989-)

It is significant that the longest-running series and that, without a doubt, has penetrated the most pop culture in history, is animated (a part of television production that, unfortunately, we have not been able to bring too much to this list, due to the abuse that classic animation suffers on our platforms). But its impact is undeniable: we know his characters as if we live with them (sometimes even very dark secondary) and its plots, phrases and clichés (“The Simpsons predicted it”) have become an inseparable part of our lives.

‘File X’ (1993-2018)

Conspiracy science fiction of the first quality that marked the television of the nineties and that was prolonged in multiple ways: a season with Robert Patrick replacing David Duchovny that was not bad at all, a couple of films and two very recent seasons and that are included in the Amazon proposal. But the nuclear and original series is still the best, with one of the best chemistry between opposite protagonists never seen on television, and a structure halfway between the supernatural soap opera and the absolutely addictive monster of the week.

‘Friends’ (1994-2004)

Perhaps, in a sense, the bright reverse of the devastating ‘Seinfeld’: a sitcom that met all the standards of the style book of the genre and that, thanks to that, it became one of the most famous productions of all time. His fans continue to be counted in the millions and his episodes are cited and revisited again and again, to the point of having generated interest in a millionaire reunion between the characters that, for a decade, fascinated viewers around the world.

‘The Sopranos’ (1999-2007)

Of all the series that symbolize the takeoff of the consideration of HBO as the genesis of the new golden age of television (although good series, for a sophisticated audience and with adult-only content, they had been doing since … well, since forever), possibly two shine with equal magnitude: the sensational and highly complex ‘The Wire’ and ‘The Sopranos’. This story, not devoid of irony and tenderness, about a New Jersey mobster who begins to receive professional help when his stressful job causes anxiety attacks, opens a new era, if not in the creation of the series, then in the reception of the public. A genuine and indisputable modern classic

’24’ (2001-2014)

With hardly any fanfare, this series has arrived on Netflix that marked television fiction with its fast-paced and wonderfully implausible concept of showing the action in real time. Each season has 24 episodes and shows a horrible working day, any given Thursday for Jack Bauer (Kiefer Sutherland), an FBI agent specializing in counterterrorism that will be plunged into presidential kidnappings, chemical weapons plots, cyberattacks, and many other threats to the free world. Netflix’s batch of seasons includes the latest, much more recent, and least watched.

‘Los Serrano’ (2003-2008)

Laugh if you want, but ‘Los Serrano’ and its monumental success is part of the history of fiction in Spanish, and a delirious fresco at times of what Spanish society was in the gentle beginnings of the 21st century. The dynamics of Antonio Resines and Jesús Bonilla, completely transcending their roles and letting their real personalities soak up the characters, are already History of Spain. And if you want more, Amazon has classic Spanish series to stop a train: ‘Verano azul’, ‘Un paso otro’, ‘7 vida’ or ‘Cuéntame’, among many others.

‘Battlestar Galactica’ (2003-2010)

Award-winning and exceptional science fiction series “serious”, which anticipated the treatment that the genre receives today on television. It is based on a hilarious (and very famous in Spain in its day) series from the seventies that, unfortunately, is not available in streaming, and tells of the confrontation in a distant galaxy between humans and a race of rebellious androids called Cylons. After a devastating attack by these, the human population is decimated and the Battlestar Galactica is the only surviving warship.

‘Lost’ (2004-2010)

You may like it more or less, but it is fair to admit that ‘Lost’ changed everything. It transformed how viewers dealt with the series and how we commented on the internet episode by episode. Something not especially new because soap opera series and that played with suspense there have always been, but that ‘Lost’ turned into a weekly event twinning millions of viewers through the network, in a way that later only events such as’ Game of thrones’. His story of a group of people trapped on an island did not end in the best way, but his successes are mythical and undeniable.

‘Mad Men’ (2007-2015)

Recent but now with the category of modern classic well deserved thanks to its extraordinary quality: it tells the adventures of the womanizer Don Draper (Jon Hamm), creative mind of a New York advertising agency. But, in reality, the series proposes rather an extraordinary portrait of social customs and, above all, the dynamics between men and women in the United States of the 1960s and 1970s. An extraordinary fiction for the portrait of a world that sometimes seems a lie.

‘Breaking Bad’ (2008-2013)

Perhaps the most recent series that has acquired the qualification of “mythical”, perhaps because it was gaining it according to its stupefied viewers they were realizing that they were not witnessing the adventures of an antihero but the devastating genesis of a villain. Bryan Cranston won four Emmys for his impressive composition of a chemistry professor who decides to start billing and distributing drugs when he discovers he has cancer, and his impact has been so great that any previous series often seems dated to us.
