Game & Watch Super Mario Bros. is full of tricks: secret illustrations, infinite lives, extra levels … We will tell you everything that the Nintendo machine hides!
As other companies release next-gen consoles, Nintendo looks to the past to celebrate the 35th anniversary of Super Mario Bros. recovering its Game & Watch line. Now on sale is Game & Watch Super Mario Bros., a limited edition that includes Super Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros. 2 and Ball. And of course, it is also a digital clock.
Its compact size and bright screen make it ideal for playing these two classics (the original and the sequel that came to the West as The Lost Levels due to its high difficulty). But the little machine is full of secrets and tricks, and here we tell you (almost) all of them.
Infinite lives
The two Super Mario Bros. save progress at all times, but if you lose all lives … start from the beginning. Fortunately, you can avoid it with infinite lives. Hold down the A button on the title screen of Super Mario Bros. or SMB 2 to unlock infinite lives. You need to hold down the button for about 5 seconds, you will see and hear a sound.
Choose world
In both SMB and SMB2, you can choose from the title screen which world you want to start with. To do this, simply press the B button and you will see in the upper right part of the screen how it changes (World 1-1, World 2-1 …).
But beware, you can only change it up to worlds that you have previously reached in a “legal” way. That is, you cannot start playing directly in world 8, you will have to get to it first by playing. Fortunately, with the infinite lives trick, you shouldn’t have a problem …
Hard Mode in Super Mario Bros
To unlock hard mode, where enemies change, move faster, and some platforms are smaller, you have to have completed the game once. You can choose it by pressing left or right on the title screen.
Secret world in Super Mario Bros. 2
If you complete The Lost Levels you will see a star on the title screen. If you complete it eight times, you will see eight stars … and you will unlock a hidden world with four levels. You must press B to enter it (A-1, A-2 …).
Play with Luigi in Ball
In this original G&W game, you can play as good old Luigi by holding down the A button for 5 seconds. Pressing it once will launch the game, but hold the A button longer to switch to Luigi.
Song “Draw with Mario”
On the clock, hold down the A button for 5 seconds to listen to the song that teaches us to draw the Super Mario face. Be careful, there is a translation error: if you want to read the subtitles in Spanish, you must choose the song in Italian.
Other tricks on the watch
If you press A or B in clock mode, you can throw enemies at Mario. If you press the Time button you can change the background. If we press A and B at the same time, the blocks will glow.
In addition, special things happen at specific times. These are the cameos confirmed for now by Nintendo …
- 7:00 AM / PM: Topo Monty appears
- 5:55 AM / PM: The blocks of the clock number are transformed into coins
- 1:11 AM / PM: Three bloopers appear floating across the screen
- 12:33 AM7PM: Mario climbs a creeper to a hidden level in the sky
Illustrations
If you leave the G&W untouched for three minutes, it goes into sleep mode … but first it shows a new illustration, which depends on what mode we are in.
- SMB / SMB 2: Some enemies take a nap in a pipe.
- Ball: Mario juggles
- Clock: Mario taking a nap
- Clock between 12 and 1 PM: Mario and Luigi eating lunch
- Clock between 11 PM and 12 AM: Bowser taking a nap
There may be even more easter eggs and hidden cameos.
