Animal Crossing New Horizons gives you the chance to dust off your Animal Crossing amiibo collection.

Each Animal Crossing amiibo helps you build the island of your dreams by giving you the chance to be something or someone special to open.

This guide also explains how and where you amiibo used in New Horizons, including the new location Photopy.

Amiibo available in Animal Crossing New Horizons

In Animal Crossing New Horizons you have three types of amiibo, but not all Animal Crossing amiibo – like DJ KK – are supported right off the bat. New amiibo should be introduced later.

The first type of amiibo supported in New Horizons is the Animal Crossing Collection amiibo.

To date, 18 Animal Crossing amiibo have been launched. Villager and Isabelle are for Super Smash Bros. while the other amiibo (including Tom Nook and Rover) have been released specifically for the Animal Crossing games.

The second type of amiibo supported by New Horizons is Animal Crossing amiibo cards.

There are 400 Animals Crossing amiibo cards in four sets. Cards range from animal dwellers such as Bob and Fang to special visitors such as Redd and Gulliver.

Five Animal Crossing promotional amiibo cards have also been released. You can find all amiibo cards from all series on the Animal Crossing website.

Finally, New Horizons also supports the Animal Crossing: New Leaf – Welcome amiibo series. This is a unique set of 50 amiibo cards that were released with the amiibo support update for Animal Crossing: New Leaf.

These cards reintroduce around fifty residents absent since the first Animal Crossing (E +), such as Stella, Tybalt and Boots.

A special set of six cards has been released for sale with Sanrio. You can find all New Leaf Welcome amiibo cards on the Animal Crossing website.

How and where to use the amiibo in Animal Crossing New Horizons

To use amiibo in Animal Crossing New Horizons, you need to go to the Town Hall Service Desk.

You will find the NookStop with a green leaf on the side. This ensures that you can use your amiibo.

Communicate with the NookStop and place the amiibo or amiibo card over the NFC touchpoint on your controller.

If you’re using a Joy-Con or Nintendo Switch Lite controller, you’ll find it on the right stick. If you’re using a Pro controller, the NFC touchpoint is located near the Nintendo Switch logo in the center of the controller.

The service desk is open early in the game and is available 24 hours a day. So you always have access to the NookStop.

What unlocks the amiibo in Animal Crossing New Horizons

Animal Crossing New Horizons offers two amiibo features:

  • Invite residents to your island
  • Photopy

Invite residents to your island

One of the main functions of amiibo cards in Animal Crossing New Horizons is that you can invite residents.

To do this, you must first build the campsite on your island. Once you’ve done that, you can use Animal Crossing amiibo cards to invite that specific resident to your island.
This resident then enters the campsite tent where you can talk to him. You will also have the opportunity to encourage visitors to become permanent residents.

Photopy

Fotopia is a special island at Animal Crossing New Horizons where you can use models from different residents to participate in photo shoots. You unlock these templates using amiibo or amiibo cards in Fotopia.
Once unlocked, you can dress the models as you like, show emotions, decorate the surroundings, and determine the camera angle.

Since you can’t use all amiibo cards – like DJ KK – right away, we can’t say for sure if there are any other special features that can be unlocked using amiibo.
You may be able to unlock special items. Just like in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Only time will tell.
