The Witcher: Monster Slayer has a full release on the App Store on July 21. A mobile game based on the Witcher universe, in the style of Pokémon GO.
We have already played the novelty and hasten to share our impressions.
At first glance, it seems that we are dealing with a clone of the famous Pokémon GO, but it is not. The game is qualitatively different from the handmade anime not for everyone. We fix it.
The atmosphere of a real monster hunter
The game is set long before the appearance of Geralt of Rivia, but the developers have not specified an exact date.
This is a tentative prequel to The Witcher, only it’s not set in-universe at all. All elements of the games remain the same, including the monsters themselves, the teams’ weapons, and potions.
Storylines Simplified to the max and it comes down to the fact that you are a witch, and your task is to kill the monsters that bother the civilians. Almost every search is backed by its own mini-story. Sometimes they are repetitive, only the details change.
The story begins when you have to create your own witch (or warlock). Don’t expect a wide selection of presets, as you are offered six different heads with different skin colors.
The developers did not go deep into the training and made it as simple as possible. The player is taught the fundamentals of the game mechanics and is almost immediately thrown into the open world.
The game world is presented Google maps with local landscape textures overlaid. Unlike Pokémon GO, you don’t have to catch anything here. All you have to do is kill the monsters. Among them are the already familiar ghouls, utopians, griffins, wyverns and others.
You have to walk in real life to move around the game world. Your point on the map moves following your geoposition. The player is constantly surrounded by a large number of monsters, which are updated daily. Places and their type change.
The developers are constantly motivating players to go out somewhere. For this there are story missions, rare monsters and points of interest.
By the way, CD Projekt RED constantly reminds before the release of the game about the need to maintain a social distance due to the coronavirus infection. That’s ok.
In short, apart from the CDPR COVID-19 alert, you can feel the atmosphere of the witch’s adventures at all times.
Smash monsters like it’s the last time
The combat system of The Witcher: Monster Hunter is very similar to that of The Elder Scrolls: Blades. Horizontal punches become fast punches, vertical punches become more powerful punches, and if you keep your finger on the screen they become block punches.
Senselessly hitting enemies is only possible in early levels. After that it’s worth it Adapt your tactic to each opponent.. Your hits determine the effectiveness of your damage, as well as the rate at which your critical attack scale fills up. The latter works according to a simple scheme: time slows down and you have to tap the screen at the right moment.
However, there is a small drawback to the “crits”. They depend on the quality of your internet connection, which means you can miss out on a good attack if you’re slow or lagging. This was the case in the beta test, and is still the case in the release.
As in any role-playing game, here we have we are improving our character. As you kill enemies, the player gains experience, and each level gives different ingredients for potions and skill points. Skills are divided into 3 types: combat, alchemy, and signs.
All branches allow you to use the unique abilities of the witch. However, the developers did not manage to competently develop them, so throwing experience at something specific is pointless. The most effective way to spend points is to develop fast and powerful attacks. These are the attacks you will use most often.
However, the warlock also has various traps and bombs. They deal damage regardless of your level, which is a definite bonus. The rest is specifically correlated to skill level.
Before each major battle, you must choose the potions and weapons you intend to use at that time. They can play a crucial role in the battle. According to the bestiary, a certain monster has a number of weaknessesThe player is notified before the battle. So you have to approach every battle wisely. You can’t go in and swipe your finger across the screen in different directions over time. Only in the initial stages.
The team works at the grassroots level. It is not broken down by rarity level here. Each new armor, for example, is slightly stronger: it adds a bonus to damage, healing, attack deflection, and the like.
As for the online component, it’s pretty sad. Interaction with other players ends with the delivery of material boxes. You won’t see raids, guilds or factions, or even general chat in Witcher mobile.
Well, perhaps among the drawbacks is the ftp model itself. You can’t get everything for the effort you put in. Some, for example powerful armor and weapons, are easier to buy with real money only. No, you can also save up to get them with your own efforts, but that will take forever, because they cost an incredible amount of money.
Well, 3,500 gold coins cost 899 rubles. And yes, your witch does not initially have a silver sword to kill the monsters. It can be purchased later.
It’s worth a try.
The end result of The Witcher: Monster Hunter is an entertaining enough game that many people appreciate it.
However, due to the microtransactions, few will stick with it. Yes, the game does not require a mandatory donation, everything in it is available for pumping, but many things are expensive.
On the other hand, unlike the same Pokemon GO, interesting story quests, some kind of pumping, dialogues, extra quests with detective elements and much more await us. And everything takes place in augmented reality, which only plays in favor of immersion in the world of witchcraft adventures.
Also, graphically the mobile game looks very good.
