Apple Watch Series 5: a small but firm step towards perfection.
Today, Apple has presented to the world its great hardware news for the coming months. With a line-up made up of the new iPhone 11, iPhone Pro, and iPhone Pro Max, the company is trying to improve on the results it achieved with the past iPhone XS and iPhone XR. However, these were not the only releases that we could see in the keynote, as we also had time to know the future of Apple Watch. And the truth is that it doesn’t look bad at all.
This year, after the Apple Watch Series 4, we all knew that we were not going to have a big change when jumping generation. We are talking about a device that has received a major redesign, and that has no need to go through a transformation as deep as last year. Even so, Apple has wanted perfecting what started with the Apple Watch Series 4, and both the Apple Watch Series 5 and the new version of watchOS have been designed for this.
The design of the Apple Watch Series 5: just as beautiful as the Series 4 but with new finishes
The new Apple Watch Series 5 maintains the same design lines than the Apple Watch Series 4. Thus, we will maintain the same appearance that managed to win us last year with its screen with reduced edges, its back of ceramic and sapphire, and the same slim body as in the past generation. Based on this principle, the new version of the watch brings with it two new materials that will complete a catalog designed to satisfy all watch lovers.
This year, together with the classic aluminum and stainless steel bodies, we will also have the possibility to choose between titanium and ceramic. It is not the first time that we have the option of choosing a ceramic body, but it is the first time that we can take a titanium Apple Watch to our wrists. This new body, manufactured to Apple’s high quality standards, will delight those who wanted to be able to maintain this very classic choice of traditional timepieces.
An always-on screen so you never stop looking at it and a compass so you never lose your north
The new Apple Watch Series 5 receives a new LTPO screen capable of bringing one of the most desired functionalities to the watch, an always-on display. Thanks to the efficiency provided by this new panel, it is capable of always showing both the time and the complications that we have in our sphere, in addition to the most basic information of the apps that enable the function. All of this while maintaining the same autonomy as the Series 4.
In addition, another of the new features of the Apple Watch Series 5 is the integrated compass. In the same way that happens on our phone, we can use this new feature for navigation apps, as well as in a dedicated application perfect for mountain breaks.
A strong commitment to health, but not only in the Apple Watch Series 5
As in the other occasions, without health, the Apple Watch Series 5 would be nothing. The new model brings with it some improvements, especially with regard to the software, which will allow us to get an idea of our current state of health. In this case, as announced at WWDC 2019, watchOS 6 brings with it new functionalities that will allow us to take better care of our hearing, control the menstrual cycle in the case of women.
On the other hand, for users in the United States, Apple continues to bet on the use of Apple Watch sensors to fully understand the health of users. Now, thanks to the Apple Research app, the company will continue working on developing new research together with prestigious institutions such as the WHO or the US National Institute of Health.
Availability and prices
The new Apple Watch Series 5, both in its normal edition and in the Nike +, Edition and Hermès editions, will be available from next September 20 both in physical stores and online. In addition, it is now possible to reserve the new model from the Apple website, as well as through the Apple Store app and the company’s physical stores, giving access to a new service called Apple Watch Studio with which we can pair the box that we want with the strap that we like the most.
The prices of the new Apple Watch start at 449 euros for the aluminum model with GPS, and depending on the combination of body and strap that we choose, prices could skyrocket up to 1,499 euros for the Apple Watch Edition and the Apple Watch Hermés. All in all, they are conservative prices compared to what we had with the Series 4, which will in fact be replaced by the Series 5, leaving the choice between the Series 3 and the Series 5.
Thus, to everyone’s surprise, the Apple Watch Series 5 surprises again without being the great redesign that many would like to have every year. It is an evolution that strengthens the leadership of the Apple Watch, and that lays the foundation for what is to come in the future.
