This time the plot, as well as in previous games in the series, takes us to a historical setting, in the year 1868 during the Industrial Revolution In London. It is presented to us the twins Jacob and Evie Frye as the protagonist young Assassins, who once again fight to stop the plans of the Templars.
Despite being very close, it is easy to see that the personalities of the two are very different: while Jacob is the macho Man carefree, Evie is more responsible and cautious. These differences help to create a good narrative, with dynamics and creative texts, with a hint of humor, that will guarantee the player’s attention – even though it is not the best plot that has ever appeared in a game in the series, and with some sucks of other franchises, such as “Uncharted” and “Tomb Raider”.
A point that deserves to be highlighted is that the differences between the two are also present during the fighting, not staying in that old and beat repetition. Jacob is more aggressive and better at hand-to-hand combat, while his sister is more agile and better at stealth, each with their own development tree and skills. And for the first time in the history of the franchise, it is possible to switch freely between the two protagonists, and some missions will be more easily solved with one or the other character.
However, despite this dynamic added by the duo, the old formula of third-person perspective and open world exploration remains basically the same, with climbing, parkour and stealth murders, but with some new features. The main one is the hook and ropewhich drastically reduces climbing time in a very tall factory chimney, for example, like traversing great distances from one roof to another.
But, if on the one hand this instrument made the action more dynamic, on the other made it too easy the game system, leaving aside more challenging locomotions due to the use of infinite ropes, bringing moments that make Batman from the “Arkham” series envious. The use of the hook/rope should be more restricted, which would give the game a more strategic feel, making the player have to think about when to use it or when to buy more ropes. Incidentally, the difficulty of the game in general is very low, without presenting major challenges or enemies with a more accurate artificial intelligence.
At carriages is another important element that helps in moving around the game map, saving valuable time, in addition to being able to “boost” them, making them more resistant and faster. They also serve as good hiding places, hide kidnapped enemies or even be used during combat and chases in parkour.
At the visual department “Syndicate” is not ugly, although it is also not impressive. The highlight is with the artistic design in portraying a beautiful Victorian London in a very faithful way, with several tall buildings, dark alleys, people in their period clothes and the iconic smoky factories.
Of course, the numerous sights of the largest metropolis on the Old Continent are present in remarkable ways in the game, such as Big Ben, the River Thames, the palaces of Wenstiment and Buckingham, among others.
Furthermore, numerous historical figures are also present, with illustrious names such as Charles Darwin, Karl Marx, Alexander Graham Bell, Charles Dickens and even your majesty Queen Victoria. A good way to improve your knowledge of London’s culture and history.
