Assassin’s Creed Valhalla players are very annoyed with how the game sounds

IN BRIEF:

  • gamers are complaining about the sound in Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla;
  • the problem is the over-compression and strange behavior of the soundtrack, resulting from an unbalanced volume.
  • A few days ago, Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla debuted on the market. Players who have purchased this production generally rate it well, although they complain about a number of errors and technical problems. One of the most common threads is the issue of sound quality. As many users point out, the problem also occurred in the last few editions of the series in question.

    Compressed sound in AC Valhalla

    The first is that the sound is over-compressed. The issue is best summed up by a meme of “Ubisoft recording sessions”.

    Is this how audio is recorded in Ubisoft? Doubtful, but I think there is something to it.

    A player called captainstarpaw conducted a comprehensive analysis, which shows that sound files Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla were recorded in 24,000 Hz, with the so-called bitrate at a maximum level of around 70 kbps. By comparison, a standard CD is recorded at 44100 Hz and a DVD at 48,000 Hz, at a much higher bitrate. The user suggests that such a large limitation in sound quality allowed to reduce the size of the game by only 7.5-8 GB (in the current version of the game, files of this type take 4.5 GB, while using 48,000 Hz and 128-160 kbps, they would require about 12 GB).

    The overall sound quality suffers from the strong lossy compression (low bitrate, optimized for file size). It is also made worse by the fact that the compression quality is not consistent for dialogue, music and SFX. The easiest way to hear it is using studio headphones / monitors. I use the Beyerdynamic DT-770 PRO myself. High frequencies are thin and lose detail, similar to the example of an MP3 file with a bitrate of 64-96 kbps – captainstarpaw points out.

    As many of you probably know, compressed audio is a major issue with the last three Assassin’s Creed games. It’s absurd that one of the core aspects of the AAA franchise is so crap, complains Ruthless527.

    Sound anomalies spoil the immersion

    The second problem that is often reported is the strange behavior of the game’s audio layer – for example, the loudness of some sounds or sudden cuts out of others.

    During dialogues, the sound suddenly breaks in the middle of a sentence, then comes back on and overlays the next dialogue line. I’m not sure how easy or difficult it is to fix this problem, but I pray the gods will fix it next patch, BleakWulf points out.

    Is it just my problem or is the audio layer in this game weird? The entire audio mix sounds wrong. SFX (especially combat sounds) and voices are very low. Everything seems to be muted and the overall quality is poor. It sounds as if the Equalizer is cutting out the bass and high frequencies. I changed the dynamic range option in the settings to try to fix this and play with the sound levels, but that didn’t help, complains Huxton.

    We also asked Michał Mańka from the editorial office of TVGra and TvFilmy for his opinion. He confirmed the low quality of the sound and described the problems he had encountered.

    While I have not encountered serious problems with the lack of sound, which are massively reported by fans on the Internet, I have a complaint about the quality of the audio mix itself. For example, the sound of a horn is so unnaturally loud in relation to all other audio levels that I turn down the volume every time before launching a raid or summoning my ship because I value my hearing. There is definitely a problem with the quality of the sound files themselves – we repeatedly hear the characteristic sound of the hidden blade a second before the kill, which sounds like it was taken straight from the first Assassin’s Creed. While the soundtrack is a masterpiece, the people responsible for the technical side of audio should get their hands on it – Michał Mańka, editor of TVFilmy.

    It is worth noting that some users of the sound in Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla spoil the fun to such an extent that they have decided to refund the game. The developers are reportedly aware of the problem and may take some action on it, although it has not yet been included in the list of known bugs.
