Attention Rootboys – Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) without Sense for the Desire HD (Full Guide).
As you know I have a Desire HD lying around right now and as some of you know I’m not a fan of skins like HTC Sense at all, no matter how well made they may be. So I finally decided on a custom ROM and after a short inquiry I decided on the CleanDHD ROM from the XDA Developers Forum.
Clean’n’Fast is among other things in the title of the original thread and that is 100 percent correct. The ROM runs endlessly, has no superfluous crap installed and is based on the latest Android version 2.3.3 and CyanogenMOD 7 Nightly. Sounds experimental at first, but so far everything works perfectly and the battery life has also improved. But before that, there are a few things to do, nothing particularly complicated, but everything has to be done.
By the way, you should have a browser with which you can access the system folder, the best is Root Explorer, which costs a few marks, but is the best way to edit the last point.
Everything is at your own risk, it worked fantastic for me in that order. If something goes wrong, I cannot promise to be able to help you! So please only do it if you know what you are doing and are aware of every step! I’ve read everything a thousand times and I think the instructions are 100 percent correct, I’m always open to feedback!
We are still “arguing” whether a downgrade is absolutely necessary because of the rooting process, I mean my system would have been up to date and I still didn’t need a downgrade to root my device.
It starts with the simplest step, rooting the DHD. All you need is Visionary from MoDaCo on your DHD (download). Once it’s installed you need to start it, make sure none of the top checkboxes are checked, then click “Temproot Now!”, after that click “Attempt Permroot Now!” and accept the upcoming SuperUser question. After a restart your device is rooted.
Now you can go to the Market and download the ROM Manager and install the ClockworkMod Recovery in it.
Now we need HBoot S-Off and Radio S-Off, for Radio S-Off we need to download and run this tool, before that you should have installed an ADB driver, the easiest way is via HTC Sync. Now connect your DHD to the PC in “Load only” mode, in the “HTC Desire HD Radio Tool” you must now select the top item “Radio S-OFF, Super-CID and SimUnlock” and click on “do it!” confirm the incoming SuperUser query on the DHD.
And now it’s time for the final steps, now you can download the ROM and put the ZIP somewhere on the SD card. Now you start the ROM Manager and select “Reboot into the recovery system”. If you are now in recovery (navigating with volume buttons, selection with power button) you can create a backup of the previous ROM under “backup and restore”, it’s not such a stupid idea :D. Then completely erase your device by navigating to “wipe date/factory reset”. Now go to “install zip from sdcard” and then to “choose zip from sdcard” and select the ZIP file that you packed on the SD card, i.e. the CleanDHD ROM.
If the ROM is installed, you now have to restart the device, once it has started up you have to enter your PIN and first skip the Google account entry etc. and DO NOT activate WLAN. You now go to Settings -> CyanogenMod -> Display -> Auto Backlight and activate the checkbox “Allow light reduction”. Now restart the device again. So now we still need the latest radio image for which we need the HBoot S-Off mentioned above and for that you follow this video guide. I have uploaded the file you need again for you so that you do not have to register there separately (download). Now you can start your DHD in fastboot mode (just press and hold the power button, select “Restart” and then “Bootloader”) and “ACE PVT ENG S-Off” should now be written at the top. If this is the case, you can leave the DHD in Fastboot and take the next step.
Now download the latest radio image (download) and follow the instructions below. I have also uploaded the tool for you here (download) so that you don’t have to register in the forum.
FINISHED! That is, almost.
There is an optional item to restore the font size to the original. You may have noticed that everything on the display is a whole notch smaller than in the original ROM, which looks good but also causes problems, especially with some games which are then no longer in full screen. To restore it to the original, simply go to the “System” folder via the root explorer and click on “Mount R/W” in the top right corner, now hold your finger there longer on the build.prop file, in the menu that appears “Open select in Text Editor” and now look for the item “ro.sf.lcd_density=190” and replace the 190 with a 240 there. Now select the menu button and “Safe & Exit”, then select “Mount R/O” again at the top right and restart the device.
If you miss Gmail, just download and install the APK.
So, if everything went as it did for me, you now have Gingerbread 2.3.3 on your DHD and are happy and content. Is your DHD now an overpriced paperweight, I warned you.
