Buy PlayStation 5? Shortages until the course of 2022, but new stock possible soon.
Sony has reportedly said in talks with analysts that the PlayStation 5 will remain scarce until next year. During an analyst meeting (via Bloomberg), Sony CFO Hiroki Totoki indicated that the company does not expect demand to decline this year. The PS5 has been virtually out of stock since its launch in November 2020, and new deliveries typically sell out within a minute.
“I don’t think demand is slowing down this year and even if we can produce many more PS5 consoles in 2022, we will not be able to meet demand,” said Totoki. During the earnings call, the CEO also said that stock problems are unlikely to be resolved any time soon.
Unfortunately, there is still little news about future deliveries in the Netherlands. At Bol.com and Coolblue, the advice is still to register for a notification, so that you may be informed at an early stage. Amazon has indicated to customers that it will receive the next delivery between 10 and 17 May, while MediaMarkt will only be able to offer single copies again in July due to all open orders. Hardware adjustment
Totoki said Sony is currently looking at several solutions to overcome the global shortage of hardware components, which may include changing the hardware or looking for secondary suppliers. “As I said before, we are aiming for more sales volume than the PS4 during the second year. But can we drastically increase the supply? No, that’s not likely, ”he said.
“The shortage of semiconductors is one factor, but there are other factors that influence production volume. So right now, we’re aiming for second annual sales of 14.8 million units, the second-year figures of PS4. ” In the latest financial results released on May 5, Sony reported that more PS5 consoles have been shipped compared to the PS4 in the same period (7.8 million versus 7.6 million).

According to the Taiwanese research firm DigiTimes, the company can meet the demand through a redesign of the hardware. The site claimed this month that vendors plan to begin production of the redesigned PS5, which will come with a new semi-custom 6nm CPU from AMD between the second and third quarters of next year. The appearance and performance of the PS5 would otherwise remain unchanged.
