Crash Bandicoot is back in a style we never dreamed of. This is not another refresh, it is not a poor-quality port, while Toys for Bob offers players a full-fledged sequel, which is not only a tribute to the series, but with due respect it introduces it into a new era. Read our Crash Bandicoot 4 review: It’s about time.
Many good heroes were born on the current generation, others returned from distant journeys and presented their charms again, but we waited far too long for one guest. Activision has a real gem in its catalog that has been kept in a broom closet under the stairs for too long. Crash Bandicoot is back, and his latest adventure proves one thing to me – platformers can tire. Fortunately, the creators don’t go too far in the way you want to throw the controller into the wall and hit the TV from the guerrilla. These torments are dosed, so as an ambitious player with years of experience, you want to play better, tire harder to prove your skills and show the world that your toes are not yet rusty …Crash Bandicoot 4 Review: It’s about time I can’t begin otherwise: you have got to know this adventure.
Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s about time you tire
I am one of the players who loves to tire, I can try for hours to pass one stage, compete with one boss, and after throwing meat left and right, I can say: I made it. When I started my adventure with Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s about time I didn’t think that my patience would be tested so often. Toys for Bob captivated me from the very beginning, because the developers allow you to approach the game in a classic or modern way from the very beginning. If we choose the first option, we must pay attention to life, because resetting the counter will make the stage start all over again.
Do not be afraid, however, if you do not have much experience in the genre and want to approach the title in a more recreational way – for such hunters of attractions there is a modernized version of the adventure, in which we do not have to pay attention to HP, we use stops more often, and when experiencing bigger problems , developers will extend a helping hand to us and allow you to use an additional item to facilitate the game. In the reviewed Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s about time it’s the best: the creators clearly know who they are addressing their production to and they know the players’ needs very well. On the one hand, we get a piece of a demanding adventure that can surprise you with uncompromising sequences, but on the other hand, we can approach the game in a more relaxed way.
Toys for Bob addresses its production to faithful fans of species, enthusiasts raised on Crash, but at the same time does not forget about younger recipients – those still inexperienced fish in a large aquarium. I am not a supporter of creating production for everyone, because such products often lose their character, but here I was very positively surprised. During the game, I had the impression that Toys for Bob, like few other developers, perfectly understood the needs of the recipients, and this knowledge was perfectly transferred to the entire production.
Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s about time not reinventing the wheel, but expanding it
This understanding of the source material was already felt in the 2017 trilogy, praised by many, and the developers built a completely new story based on it. In Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s about timewe start the adventure on a seemingly known beach, after a short introduction we start to control the title character and from the first jump, attack, smash the first boxes or jump on the heads of several opponents, I realized one thing: it’s just Crash. Familiar movements, almost the same feeling when traveling as a character convinced me that Toys for Bob did not decide to revolutionize. The authors do not intend to fight all fanatics of this IP, but this does not mean that the title does not offer anything new … Only all these new mechanics have been comprehensively implemented in the game and have become part of it. As I progressed through the stories, I even found myself wondering how some of the elements were realized in the aforementioned trilogy – the problem is that they were simply not there.
However, before I go on to discuss the novelties themselves, I have to outline an important element without which the story about gameplay does not make much sense. The creators cleverly linked the refreshing of the gameplay with the story, because at the very beginning of the adventure we see a scene in which N. Tropy, Neo Cortex and, of course, Uka Uka are trying to free themselves from prison at all costs. Unfortunately for Crash, their mission is somewhat accomplished, which becomes the story’s starting point. The striped jam has to take matters into its own hands, find new allies, defeat known foes, and the whole story is amazingly extensive. You will hear more dialogue during the game than in the entire series, but you cannot count on them adding anything to the experience. The developers wanted to expand the game through narration, they did their job, but I can’t say for events to capture me. It’s still Crash in all its glory, so there’s a new adventure out there somewhere, and in this case, gameplay is at the fore. As I mentioned, it does not disappoint because it has been interestingly developed.
When I wrote about “new allies”, I meant the Quantum Masks that appeared in the world after Uka Uka tore space-time and caused chaos. Aku-Aku advises Crash to find all the items, because only by working together can we overcome the approaching evil. And so in the reviewed Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s about time the most important refreshment of the game appears – we now come across new masks during the missions, which allow us to slow down time, to quickly jump over dynamically moving platforms, summon or remove inaccessible objects, change gravity and allow us to run on the ceiling, or make our hero spin like crazy and in this way break through to previously inaccessible places. The developers use familiar themes that we’ve seen in other games, but put them wisely in new clothes, thereby making the gameplay colorful. Thanks to the animations, movements and the feeling itself – we are still aware that we are playing Crash, but the whole thing has been significantly expanded.
Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s about time to explore wisely designed places
The creators cleverly expanded the game, but at every step they throw elements at players that will stimulate even the most ossified hearts of platform fans. There are many sequences in the game such as running away from a large opponent, we often have the opportunity to enter an additional level to walk in it in 2D and we are constantly fighting in search of more boxes. The progression itself, which now takes place in stages, was built in a very interesting way, and during the game players are aware of how well they manage to complete a given level. Now, on each level (not counting the bosses), we can get as many as six gems and maxing out all locations will take a lot – learning the main story is fun for 8-9 hours, but during this time you have no chance to get 100% in each location.
As I already mentioned: the difficulty level is high, and some locations were able to surprise me with a great variety of attractions. The authors play with perspective very wisely and manage to place several boxes in places that are easy to miss. The player now has to approach the location very carefully – sometimes you have to jump additionally, other times go back, and there are even spots with an alternative room – it’s easy to miss a few surprises. This is where the huge advantage of the reviewed Crash Bandicoot 4 comes in: It’s about time: the production is extremely repeatable. The first completion of the game is actually the beginning, because the main storyline includes 43 main levels (including 5 bosses), but players have the opportunity to visit each area in the N. Verted version (change of graphics and colors), which gives us already 86 spots. In addition, the developers have prepared exactly 21 Flashback Levels (shorter challenges), to which we get access only after finding special tapes, and we also have the opportunity to check the locations where we control Tawna, Neo Cortex and Dingodile.
Each of the heroes has a unique set of moves and uses their own equipment – Tawna uses a hook, which is perfect for combat and allows you to reach for a few additional chests. The Cortex gun or the Dingodile shotgun vacuum cleaner are also great. At this point it is definitely worth explaining that we can finish the whole game with Crash or Coco – the characters have identical animations, so the change is basically purely cosmetic. There are also tons of new outfits for the main characters in the game, but unlocking them is usually associated with difficult challenges.
Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s about time proposing to fight on one couch
I have already mentioned that the Toys for Bob team knows their audience well, and the best proof of this are the attractions prepared for players on one couch. The game allows you not only to participate in multiplayer modes of completing levels in the appropriate style, but we can classically give ourselves a controller, for example after death or the end of the level. The developers have even prepared a system that informs us that it’s high time to announce it is further. Simple? Quite banal, but it reminded me of the fun I had playing the classic trilogy with my friends – then nobody thought about playing online … And it’s a pity that the creators of the reviewed Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s about timethey forgot about it, because the title would be perfectly expanded with simple cooperation or PVP struggles. Both elements are available in the game, but at least at the moment we can’t invite a friend from another city to play.
The reviewed Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s about time is also one of the most beautiful games available on the current generation. The character animations have been refined to the limit, the main character looks great, and during the journey we come to new locations that have their own characteristic themes and unique character, and are colorful – the futuristic city looks beautiful, it will find here is a lot of pleasure for Mad Max enthusiasts, Jack Sparrow would find his four walls, it is also easy to admire the classic jungle, and the developers add their variation on Mardi Gras. In terms of the setting, the title resembles high-budget animations that we looked at until recently in cinemas, and now we can literally participate in this crazy fun.
Of course, the unique enemies in each world have not been forgotten, as well as the addition of new crates to the worlds (they are even so dangerous!), But I must definitely pay attention to the execution of the heroes. A lot was said about the appearance of the characters before the premiere, but honestly? I love the refreshed look a bit crazy Crash, which pairs very well with the thoughtful Coco. The situation is the same for the other characters – although Tawna made the best impression on me. The game is of course linear and we are led by the hand almost from the beginning … Or rather, we lead the hero around the world map, but the location selection system should appeal to fans of the first Crash game.
Crash Bandicoot 4 shows that you don’t need to make remasters. “It’s about time” to develop the universes
With all this refreshment and variety, Crash Bandicoot offers a piece of very satisfying gameplay that has not lost the classic atmosphere. Although the game features such elements as riding on large metal structures, rocking on lianas and systematically using new masks, all the time when we touch the analogs, we feel that we are moving this old, one would like to say “a bit rusty” Crash, but just this hero has never been so alive. The creators have not forgotten about the boss fights, they take care of my favorite and breath-hold chases to mix it all in a ___tail that made it difficult for me to leave the TV. I played the trilogy many years ago, later I got to know its modern versions on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch.
Toys for Bob proves at every step that it is worth developing this IP and although I would like this adventure to last a good 2 hours longer, I am delighted, because I will come back to this production many times. And you should not wait either, because there aren’t many good platformers on the market that wisely develop the classic concept to offer players something new – while not forgetting the basics of the series.
In my opinion, the reviewed Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s about time is by far the best part of the series.
