Relevant for platform: PC
This summer publishing house THQ Nordic decided to go under the sign of the return of the classics. In mid-June, a full-fledged continuation of the cult series was released Desperados, a remake appeared a little later SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom, and at the end of the second summer month, the alien Krypto from the famous game of fifteen years ago returned to Earth. Destroy all humans! studio sample 2020 Black Forest Games – a remake of those who try to modernize only the technical component, leaving the basics of gameplay and plot unchanged. But will this gameplay be relevant to the modern gamer after so long?
It seems that representatives of the powerful Furon race can find interesting things on a distant planet called Earth? While stupid little people are just beginning to explore and compete with each other, who have a longer rocket and thicker nuclear arsenal, the Furon have been “surfing the universe” for a long time. But the crash of one of the flying saucers during US-led missile tests leads to people not only capturing samples of alien technology, but also getting their hands on one of the aliens. The main character DAH! named Crypto-137 goes to Earth to save the prisoner, but it soon turns out that the terrestrial biosphere, especially the people themselves, is valuable for the survival of the furons which gradually degenerate.
The point is that as a result of long years of evolution, accompanied by many wars, aliens have lost the ability to reproduce naturally (they simply lost the body parts necessary for the exciting process leading up to conception). Cloning solved the problem, but only for a while – with each new clone, Furon’s DNA becomes less stable, which negatively affects the viability of the species.
Fortunately, the sapiens inhabiting Earth turned out to be long-time descendants of the Furon – several thousand years ago, the crew of one of the ships visited our planet and “had a little fun. with the local population ”. As a result, every human brainstem contains valuable alien DNA that can be extracted and used to restore the lost abilities of the alien species.
Experiments on cows? Well that’s too much!
Crypto will have to overcome many dangers in its path – from the civilian population, intimidated by stories of “green men”, to the military, who see the communist threat everywhere. But the main enemy of the Furon will be a mysterious organization that seems to be aware of a sudden alien invasion – these people have their own plans for the aliens in black.
Lesser life form
The plot of the re-release meticulously follows the original: the voice files were taken from the 2005 game, and the cutscenes are almost exact copies of old videos. DAH! – a parody, and a very bad parody: the humor here is literally at the limit of what is allowed. Humanity is a bunch of scum and idiots who can’t see past their own noses, and in terms of loving their neighbor, seemingly evil aliens can give people a big head start.
Crypto can read every person’s mind, but they differ little from the contents of cattle skulls – it’s no surprise that the alien initially confused cows with the main inhabitants of the planet. Ordinary people think only about themselves having fun, and the military, ready to blame any danger on the intrigues of the “red bellied” rushes to destroy anyone who doubts “true American values” (which, apparently, correspond to the thought of the people).
No less bloodthirsty are the methods Crypto uses to perform tasks: destruction, killing people in different ways, extracting the brain with an probe (yes, yes), interrogation and torture – there is no good people here, and black humor is in the foreground.
“Disgusting bone bags! It is unlikely that this populace will be able to arouse at least some sympathy.
Oddly enough, such satire seems relevant even fifteen years after the original’s release – and that may be the only reason to familiarize yourself with the re-release for those not associated with the game with pleasant memories.
I’ll kill everyone, I’ll be alone
The basics of the gameplay didn’t go further from the original source than from the plot. In addition to completing the main tasks at one of six levels (rather stereotypical locations – a provincial town, a secret base, a farm, a resort village, an industrial zone, and the capital), you can return to areas already open and entertain you in sandbox mode, doing various tasks for time or speed… DNA points collected during such outings can be used at the orbital base to pump both Krypto’s equipment and the equipment of his deadly flying saucer.
Either way gameplay DAH! barely able to surprise a sophisticated player: in addition to using stealth mode (Crypto knows how to disguise himself as anyone he meets), you almost always have to do exactly what is included in the game’s title – destroy the humanity in every way possible. Four types of weapons, telekinesis, fuel barrels, boxes with explosives and, finally, a flying saucer with three types of weapons on board will help with this.
Disguised as any person, the mind control that turns enemies into allies and the manipulation of people will come in handy for Crypto in tasks that need to be done secretly.
Opponents who use a Gta the alarm system (the more Krypto hurts others, the more dangerous the enemies become), does not cause much trouble, which cannot be said of the bosses. The last one is particularly disgusting – you have to sweat to defeat it, but here the main obstacle will be the save system using key points, and not the exceptional abilities of artificial intelligence.
Having fun, just destroying everything around, is also possible, but there is not much fun. The destructibility is no longer surprising, and there are now enough alternatives to shooting stupid soldiers and police or hunting civilians. Gta– fit gameplay is best left alone Gta – she’s doing much better.
Still, it can’t be said that the developers of the reissue cheated: the game has become much more convenient both externally (the interface got rid of a lot of text menus) and in terms of the control that supports keyboard and mouse in addition to the usual gamepad. The graphics have been extended to a height worthy of a modern project, keeping the style of the original and not forgetting to add various amenities, like demonstrating the work of artists. Also, the authors finalized one of the assignments, including documents that were not included in the original.
The flying saucer is allowed to steer seldom. This is understandable – with its help you can shave the entire level down to the ground.
Is it worth playing this in 2020? Outdated gameplay is unlikely to be enjoyed by those who perceive the work Black Forest Games as an independent game. Still, even in this form, it looks funny due to the dark humor that has retained its relevance, with which every little thing is saturated here.
Well, if you liked the original and want to refresh old memories, the answer is strictly yes – a remake that copies almost completely. DAH! 2005 turned out to be exactly what these reissues should be.
Benefits: keep the style of the original graphics and sound; dark humor.
Less: obsolete game design.
