IN BRIEF:

  • Elon Musk explained what the Neuralink, a device for direct communication between the brain and a computer, looks and works like;
  • Neuralink can be used to treat diseases involving impaired transmission of impulses in neurons;
  • the device implanted in the brain can be safely removed, as evidenced by one of the experimental pigs.

The recently shown Neuralink, or at least its early development version, generated a lot of interest. Elon Musk presented a device that can read signals in the brain and transmit them to the computer and vice versa. It also explains how it works, how it is implanted and whether it is possible to safely remove the module from the body.

Three pigs have shown how Neuralink works and proven to be removable. One of these guinea pigs has the device currently installed, behaving normally, and showing no health problems. The other one had previously been implanted and removed. In this way, it was proved that Neuralink extraction is possible.

Elon Musk explained what the implementation of Neuralink will look like. A small device will be placed in a hole cut in the skull, while very thin wires connected to it will be located in important places in the brain. Small electric threads are thinner than a human hair and can transmit signals in both directions – receiving and manipulating impulses from neurons. The device’s battery is supposed to last for a whole day of work and be charged wirelessly.

Along with the system implanted in the skull, a device that does this has also been developed. It was found that it was more reliable to carry out this operation by the machine. Limiting the human factor will increase the precision, sterility and safety of Neuralink placement in the body. Like a very precise sewing machine, a robotic “surgeon” will place extremely thin wires in the right places in the brain.

Neuralink may also be used in the future in the treatment of various diseases related to impaired signal transmission in the brain. Musk lists conditions such as memory loss, depression, blindness and seizures. The new invention may help to treat them by regulating the impulses sent in the brain centers.

Concerns have been raised about the possibility of “mind hacking”, but the device design team said that the data will be properly encrypted. The reality created in the film Inception is not a threat to us yet. Currently, the phase of testing the prototype on animals has proved that the device is relatively safe, but also that there is still a long way to go.
