Evoland 2 for iPhone, iPad and Apple TV: the continuation of the Evoland story

Shiro Games has mixed several different genres in this new installment. Although the original Evoland never quite managed to surpass the influential established titles, the sequel turned out to be a really great game. Evoland 2 was released on iOS in March 2018.

Evoland 2’s graphics improve as the game progresses…

In the story, your hero keeps traveling through time, fighting enemies, making friends, and making tough decisions. For the most part, the game uses a top-down view in the vein of Secret of Mana or Legend of Zelda. Unique dungeons, bosses, puzzles and challenges await you – basically anything that will stop you from saving the present, the past and the future.

The main difference of Evoland 2 is the mix of different genres. The look and interface will change from one place to another, and as you progress through the game you will have to adapt to the new way of playing and the new controls. Sometimes Evoland 2 resembles the original NES or Gameboy game, other times it’s a PS2 game, and other times it’s a standard RPG that constantly switches to different modes, including collectible card game, puzzle solving, etc.

The game is a mix of meaningful dialogues and comedic interludes. Evoland 2 is both playful and thoughtful. Unlike Evoland, the second part explains what happens and tells its own story, just like in the old games.

The overall gameplay of Evoland 2 cannot be called innovative, but the RPG component is really good, except for some touch control issues. The game supports controllers, and they are very useful in difficult situations. Playing against some bosses with touch controls is quite difficult, but at the same time the game doesn’t force you to switch to a controller, it’s just harder to move forward.

We won’t go into too much detail about each of the side genres or quests, but in general almost all of them are interesting, except maybe the card game. In Evoland 2 you will find quite a few moments where you have to learn a new system, but if you like variety, that shouldn’t be a problem.

While the first part took you about 4 hours, you’ll spend about 20 in Evoland 2. You get the impression that the original Evoland was just a proving ground and all the cream went to the sequel. In terms of dialogue, story or mechanics, Evoland 2 is superior to the original. The game has its own style that evokes nostalgic feelings.
