Facebook launches dating portal in Germany – and that makes it different from Tinder.

The dating market does not stand still, even if you should keep your personal contacts to a minimum given the exploding number of infections. Maybe that’s why so many people are escaping to the online world right now.
So it’s no coincidence that the US giant Facebook is launching its own dating portal, which is slowly catching on in Germany. When Facebook announced this feature in 2018, Tinder stock responded with a crash.

As of this writing, at least for me, the button that takes you to the dating section only appears on the Android app, not on iOS. And here you can only create your profile and not match any of your Facebook friends. But even when setting up, there are some striking differences to the competitor Tinder. By the way, Facebook asks your age – if you’re under 18, you can’t get in.
Facebook Price: Free

Facebook Dating: Screenshots forbidden
It is striking, for example, that the dating area does not allow screenshots, with a few exceptions, which I don’t think is a bad idea. On Twitter in particular, it is customary to make fun of particularly strange profiles in public.
But if you want to use Facebook Dating, you have to think about who you actually give all the data to. And it quickly becomes clear: Facebook wants to know a lot more about you than Tinder. This has advantages and disadvantages.

Facebook lets you filter by height, religion, education, and more
For example, Facebook is more advanced when it comes to specifying one’s own gender or sexual identity. There is a choice of cis woman, trans woman, cis man, trans man and non-binary person. When specifying who you are looking for, however, you can only choose between women/men/everyone, just like with Tinder.
But it gets a bit spooky if you want to filter the search even further. In addition to age and distance, you also have controls for size, language, educational qualifications, children and religious beliefs.

You can mark each entry as “This is a must” if you wish. “If that’s not a must, we occasionally show you profiles that don’t have this characteristic, but could still suit you,” explains Facebook below.
Facebook Dating compares groups and events
Tinder has always had the option to log in with Facebook, and if you’re friends with someone on the other platform, Tinder still shows that to my knowledge. But Facebook itself has so many more ways of finding things in common, for example through shared groups or events that you may have attended unnoticed.
Something else stands out when designing the profile: In contrast to Tinder, Facebook Dating allows you to use a specific photo as the profile picture, which is always displayed at the top. Below that remains the option to select additional photos or to connect your Instagram account.

However, I haven’t been able to discover a Spotify link so far (music taste is not unimportant to me). However, Instagram and Facebook Stories are integrated into Facebook Dating.
Secret Crush: Finally find your secret crush
In addition to the normal matching, there is probably also the “Secret Crush”, i.e. “secret swarm”. This allows you to select up to nine Facebook friends or Instagram followers that you secretly like. If this also happens vice versa, you will be matched.
It won’t be made public that you use Facebook Dating or who you choose to be a Secret Crush, so you don’t have to worry about that. But you should be aware of how many intimate details you reveal to Facebook when you set it up.

The matching area in Germany should be activated shortly. When the time comes, we will update this article. Open questions will be answered by Facebook here in the help area. What do you think – do you also give Facebook a chance in your love life?
