So much to find the perfect combination of Player Chemistry, Team Chemistry Y Chemistry Styles (three aspects that we will explain below) can increase the attributes of the players up to 90 points, with an average of 10 points of increase to each skill affected by the Chemistry Styles. It is more or less the equivalent of turning a Silver card into a gold, or a Gold into a rare card.
At the same time, low Chemistry can greatly reduce your player’s attributes, turning a Gold into a Silver.
The benefits and costs of hit or miss in Chemistry are enormous. But how does Chemistry work? What affects you? How do you combine Player Chemistry, Team Chemistry, and Chemistry Styles to improve your FUT players?

FIFA 21 Chemistry Explained – How Player Chemistry, Team Chemistry and Chemistry Styles work
Understanding the Chemistry of FUT can be somewhat difficult at first, especially when you start looking at the equations that govern the system. Let’s start at the beginning: explaining what chemistry is and how it works.
There are two types of Chemistry in FIFA Ultimate Team that create a Total Chemistry score to which are added the Chemistry Styles modifiers that affect how it works. These are the keywords:
- Player Chemistry – Rated out of 10 with each player
- Team Chemistry – Rated out of 100 with the entire team.
- Total Chemistry – A hidden number that arises from the combination of Player Chemistry and Team Chemistry. A high Total Chemistry will increase its attributes, a low one will lower it.
- Chemistry Styles – Modifiers that affect which stats increase and how much they increase when you have strong Chemistry.
Ultimately, the reason you want good Player and Team Chemistry is because your player’s attributes are greatly increased or decreased when you go to the pitch.
Interestingly, Player Chemistry and Team Chemistry don’t affect attribute increases in the same way. In fact, according to a post in which EA Sports finally revealed the numbers behind Chemistry, Player Chemistry accounted for 75% of the increase and Team Chemistry for just 25%. In other words, it is much more important that your card has a maximum Player Chemistry of 10 than it has a Team Chemistry of 100, although of course it helps.
How does FIFA Chemistry work and how does it affect player stats?
Once we have gotten rid of the base we can go into detail.
Whether or not a player’s attributes change is determined by their Total Chemistry, a score that, like Team Chemistry, is scored out of 100. If the Total Chemistry score is greater than 50 out of 100, the player’s attributes will increase. If it is below 50, they will go down. If you stay at 50, they won’t change. When they increase or decrease depends on how much you have exceeded 50 Total Chemistry above or below.
Unfortunately, EA Sports has not given the exact figures on this, but generally the higher the Total Chemistry, the higher the stat increase, with 100 assuming the maximum increase (90 attribute points distributed according to the Styles of Chemistry).
How to calculate a Player’s Total Chemistry:
- Multiply his Player Chemistry by 7.5 (10 x 0.75)
- Multiply Team Chemistry by 0.25
- Add both results
For example, if I have a Cristiano Ronaldo with a Player Chemistry of 9 and his Player Chemistry is 90, that would be 67.5 + 22.5, with a total Chemistry of 90 out of 100. His attributes will increase a lot, almost to the maximum.
Which attributes they improve and the maximum they can increase are determined by the Chemistry Styles.
It is important to take into account at this point that Chemistry is calculated at the beginning of the game and therefore is not affected by substitutions, changes of formation or any other decision of the coach once the game begins.
How much do player attributes increase or decrease due to Chemistry?
The exact numbers are unclear, but we know the following:
- The maximum increase, if a player has 100 Team Chemistry and 10 Player Chemistry, is a total of attribute points, distributed according to the player’s Chemistry Styles (even if they only have Basic, which is distributed equally among all attributes).
- The maximum drop, if a player has 0 Team Chemistry and 0 Player Chemistry, is 25 points in all attributes.
- Attributes begin to increase with a 5 in Player Chemistry and decrease with a 3 in Individual Chemistry, staying the same at 4. It is not entirely clear right now how Total Chemistry (hidden, we remember) influences this aspect.

How to increase Chemistry in FIFA Ultimate Team
Player Chemistry and Team Chemistry are similarly increased, with a number of factors changing their score. For ideal results you will want to reach 10 and 100 respectively, so here is a list of the elements that can increase the Chemistry score in FIFA 21:
- Player position – The player’s position, indicated under his card, will appear as red, orange or green. Red means totally out of position, reducing Player and Team Chemistry. Orange means partially out of position, lowering (but less than red) Player and Team Chemistry. Green means they are in the correct position, increasing Player and Team Chemistry.
- Links with other players – Indicated by the colored lines between players; they will appear as red, orange or green. The color indicates what type of connection they have (club, league or nationality). Red means nothing in common, lowering Player and Team Chemistry. Orange signifies a common element and will increase Player and Team Chemistry. Green means they have two or more qualities in common, increasing Player and Team Chemistry much more than Orange. The true result is determined by all of the player’s links: each red is a -1, each orange is a +1, and each green is a +2. Adding all the links you need a positive result for Chemistry to win.
- Coach – Similar to player links, the coach’s nationality and league (but not his club) affect both Player and Team Chemistry. Each player who shares nationality or league with the coach will receive a Chemistry bonus, shown with a small icon of a tie on his card.
- Loyalty – Those players who have played 10 or more matches with your club will receive a loyalty bonus, increasing their Player Chemistry by 1 point. It will come out as a green shield on your card.
Although all of these factors affect both Player Chemistry and Team Chemistry, it is possible to have high Team Chemistry and lower Player Chemistry.
This is because the amount of Team Chemistry you generate can add up to much more than the 100 points you need to reach your maximum: with a team full of orange links, you have enough to reach 100.
In the same way, you can even come up with some red links on your team as long as you have enough greens and oranges to override them. A challenge that some community members have set themselves is ‘No wasted link’, where each player has exactly 9 Player Chemistry (no more, no less) and goes up to 10 thanks to coach or loyalty.
Lastly, a word about substitutes in FIFA Ultimate Team. EA Sports has clarified that substitutions are not affected by the factors listed above. Instead, all substitutes enter with a 5 out of 10 in Individual Chemistry, which when incorporated into the formula reveals that their Total Chemistry is 62.5 out of 100.
Therefore, substitutes can enter any position (you can put Messi as goalkeeper if you prefer) without detriment to their Chemistry score. Its increase only depends on Team Chemistry, which as previously mentioned is calculated before the game starts and is not affected by substitutions, formations or other changes of the coach in the middle of the game.
